I was in a one-year contract marriage with Blake, a powerful hockey star. I played the perfect, quiet wife while he still pined for his ex-girlfriend, Sophie.

On the night of our anniversary, I got a frantic call from the care home. Sophie had visited my grandmother, taunting her with intimate photos of her and Blake, and deliberately provoked her into a fatal heart attack.

When I confronted Blake at the hospital, he shielded a crying Sophie in his arms and coldly accused me of lying. He didn’t care that my only family was dead. Instead, he used his immense wealth to erase the care home’s security footage and threatened the only witness, a poor nurse, into changing her story. He even forced me to move back into his penthouse to maintain his public image, letting Sophie parade around my home.

When Sophie faked a fall to frame me, Blake got hurt trying to catch her. He glared at me with pure disappointment.

    “Apologize. To her.”

I stared at the man I once thought I loved, my grief and despair solidifying into a cold, hard hatred. How could he demand I apologize to the woman who murdered my grandmother?

I didn’t cry or beg. I walked up to Sophie and slapped her across the face with all my strength.

Then, I secretly met with Blake’s biggest rival to make a deal. I would stay in Blake’s golden cage, but this time, I wasn’t the prisoner. I was the hunter.

The Unwanted Wife And Her Ruthless Revenge Chapter 1

    Emilia POV:
The single candle flame flickered, dancing in my eyes.
On the table sat a perfectly cooked steak, garlic mashed potatoes, and asparagus. A bottle of expensive red wine I couldn’t really afford was breathing on the counter.
    Three years.
    Our third wedding anniversary.
I glanced at my phone. Blank screen. No messages. No missed calls.
In three years of a PR contract marriage to Blake Sterling, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, I should have been used to the silence. But a stupid, stubborn part of me still hoped.
My phone lit up, and my heart jumped into my throat. An unknown number. Maybe this was it. A surprise he’d arranged.
I swiped to answer, my voice a little too breathless. “Hello?”
“Is this Ms. Emilia Hayes?” a cold, professional voice asked. “This is Chicago General Hospital. Your grandmother, Eleanor Hayes, is in critical condition. We need you to come immediately.”
My fork slipped from my fingers, landing on the plush rug with a dull thud.
I grabbed my keys, my purse, and ran.
The drive was a blur. The city lights smeared across my windshield like wet paint. I turned on the radio, needing a distraction from the panic clawing at my throat.
“… exclusive! Chicago Blackhawks captain Blake spotted tonight at Gibson’s, dining with his former flame, model Sophie Price. Sources say the two were incredibly close, sparking rumors that the old romance is back on…”
My hand flew from the wheel and slammed into the dashboard. Pain shot up my arm, but it was nothing compared to the ice flooding my veins.
    My husband.
    On our anniversary.
While my grandmother was dying, he was with his “true love.”
I burst through the emergency room doors, the scent of antiseptic and fear making my stomach clench. Maria White, the nurse who cared for my grandma, was pacing near the entrance, her face streaked with tears.
“Emilia, you’re finally here!” She grabbed my arm, her hands trembling. “About an hour ago, a Miss Sophie came to visit. She and Eleanor were in the room and they argued…”
Before she could finish, the doors to the trauma unit swung open. Dr. Wright emerged, pulling off his surgical mask with a weary sigh.
He looked at me and shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Hayes. We did everything we could. The patient suffered a massive, sudden cerebral hemorrhage. We were unable to revive her.”
The sounds of the hospital faded into a dull, buzzing hum. My grandmother. The only family I had. The person who adopted me and gave me life.
    Gone.
“No,” I whispered, grabbing the front of Dr. Wright’s scrubs. The fabric twisted in my fist. “That’s impossible. She was fine this morning. Why would this happen?”
“The patient’s blood pressure spiked to a catastrophic level,” Dr. Wright explained gently. “It’s usually triggered by severe emotional distress.”
    Severe emotional distress.
    My head snapped toward Maria.
I stumbled over to the nurse, my hands gripping her shoulders. “What did Sophie say to my grandmother? Tell me. You have to tell me everything.”
Maria flinched, her eyes wide with fear. “She… she said you’d never be a real Sterling. That Blake was going to divorce you and marry her.”
“She told Eleanor, ‘You old bitch, you’ll get to watch your precious granddaughter get thrown out on the street,’” Maria sobbed, repeating the words.
Every syllable was a hammer blow to my heart.
It was Sophie. She killed my grandmother.
My hand was shaking so hard I could barely unlock my phone. I dialed the number I knew by heart. It rang and rang, finally clicking on the sixth ring.
“Emilia?” Blake’s voice was laced with impatience. I could hear faint laughter in the background. A woman’s laugh.
I forced my own voice to be steady, devoid of the hurricane raging inside me. “Blake. My grandmother is dead.”
A pause. Then, “I’m sorry to hear that, Emilia. I’ll have my assistant handle the arrangements.”
    “Sophie agitated her,” I said.
His tone shifted instantly, becoming defensive. “Emilia, don’t be ridiculous. Sophie was just being kind, paying a visit.”
A laugh escaped my lips, a broken, ugly sound. “Kind? You’re with her on our anniversary, Blake, and you’re telling me she’s ‘kind’?”
“Our marriage is a contract, Emilia. Don’t forget who you are,” he said.
That single sentence murdered the last shred of warmth I had for him. I ended the call.
My phone buzzed again. A push notification from TMZ.
The headline was a punch to the gut: “Blake and First Love Sophie Check Into Hotel, Is The Golden Couple Finally Back Together?”
The accompanying photo showed them from behind, walking into the Peninsula Hotel, his arm wrapped possessively around her waist.
I looked at the picture on my phone.
    Blake. Sophie.
I swear, I will make you pay in blood.

The Unwanted Wife And Her Ruthless Revenge Chapter 2

    Emilia POV:
I walked out of the hospital, got in my car, and drove straight to the nearest police precinct.
Inside, the air smelled of stale coffee and bureaucracy. An officer named Davis listened to my story with a practiced look of sympathy on his face.
I laid it all out, my voice flat and controlled. I accused Sophie of intentionally causing the emotional distress that led to my grandmother’s death.
“Ms. Hayes, I’m very sorry for your loss,” he said, clicking his pen. “But words, even cruel ones, are very difficult to prosecute as manslaughter or murder.”
“There was a witness,” I insisted. “A nurse. And there are security cameras in the hallway.”
He nodded, making a note. “We’ll look into it. Leave us your contact information, and we’ll be in touch if there’s an update.” He handed me a business card.
I walked out of the station into the blinding afternoon sun. I knew this was just a formality.
I drove to the penthouse apartment that was, in name only, our home. The housekeeper, Mrs. Finch, met me at the door, her eyes full of pity.
    “Ma’am, I am so sorry…” she began.
I just shook my head and walked past her, heading straight for the study.
Blake was there, sitting behind his massive mahogany desk. He was still in yesterday’s suit, setting down his mobile phone as I entered. He looked at me with a blank expression as if he’d been waiting.
I slapped Officer Davis’s business card down on the desk. “I’ve filed a police report.”
Blake didn’t even raise an eyebrow. “The precinct commander calls me the moment a Sterling enters their doors,” he said coldly. “I’ve handled it.”
A cold dread washed over me. “Handled it? What does that mean?”
He picked up the phone on his desk, dialed a number, and put it on speaker. “Officer Davis, Blake here. Regarding my wife’s report from earlier…”
The respectful, almost fawning voice of the same officer came through the speaker. “Mr. Sterling, not to worry. We checked the hospital’s security footage. Unfortunately, the camera outside your grandmother-in-law’s room happened to have a malfunction late last night.”
My blood ran cold. A “malfunction.” How convenient.
“And as for the nurse,” Blake continued, his icy blue eyes locked on mine, “I believe she may be reconsidering the accuracy of her statement.”
“You threatened her?” I whispered, horrified.
“I merely reminded her that in this city, saying the wrong thing can be very costly,” he said, as if discussing the weather.
A wave of fury washed over me. I lunged across the desk, my hand raised to slap his arrogant face, but he caught my wrist in a grip of steel. His strength was terrifying.
“Emilia, don’t act like a lunatic,” he said, his brow furrowed in disgust.
Just then, the study door opened.
Sophie walked in, wearing one of Blake’s white button-down shirts. Her hair was damp, and a smug, triumphant smile played on her lips.
“Blake, honey, I can’t find the hair dryer…” Her voice was sweet as poison. She feigned surprise when she saw me, her hand flying to her mouth. “Oh, Emilia. You’re here. I’m so, so sorry to hear about your grandmother.”
She was wearing my husband’s shirt. In my home. Apologizing for a death she caused.
It was the sickest joke I’d ever heard.
I wrenched my wrist from Blake’s grasp, my gaze slicing across Sophie’s face.
“Get out of my house,” I said, my voice dangerously low.
Sophie immediately shrank behind Blake, her shoulders trembling. “Blake, she’s scaring me…”
He moved to shield her, positioning his body between us. “Emilia, that’s enough. Sophie is my guest.”
“A guest?” I laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. “A guest who spends the night and wears the host’s clothes?”
Blake’s face darkened. “I’m telling you again, this ends now. Sophie is innocent, and I will not have you harassing her.”
“Innocent?” I pointed a shaking finger at her. “She’s a murderer! And you, Blake, you’re her accomplice!”
A flash of impatience crossed his eyes. He reached into a drawer, pulled out a document, and tossed it on the desk in front of me.
It was a contract. A termination addendum to our prenuptial agreement.
“You should calm down and think about how to end this with some dignity,” he said, his voice a final, chilling verdict. “Instead of acting like a madwoman.”

The Unwanted Wife And Her Ruthless Revenge Chapter 3

    Emilia POV:
I stared at the cold, legal document on the desk, then at Sophie, who was nestled against Blake’s side like a contented cat. The last embers of affection I might have held for him turned to ash.
“Blake is right, Emilia,” Sophie said, her voice soft, but her eyes gleaming with victory. “You’re making a scene. We’re all sad about your grandmother, but you can’t blame innocent people.”
I ignored her. I picked up the document and flipped through the pages. My lawyer and I had prepared for this day for over a year.
I reached into my own bag, pulled out a much thicker folder, and dropped it on the desk with a satisfying thud.
“No need for yours,” I said. “I have my own.”
Blake and Sophie both stared. My document was twice as thick as his, filled with red-penned notes and highlighted clauses.
“According to our PR agreement, the end of the three-year term, which was yesterday, was the natural expiration date of the contract,” I stated calmly. My voice was quiet, but it cut through the silence of the room.
“As the hired party, I have the right to decline renewal. This is my notice of termination, along with a detailed invoice for the compensation owed to me, as stipulated in the contract.”
Blake picked up my folder. His blue eyes scanned the pages, his brow tightening with every line he read.
Sophie leaned over his shoulder. When her eyes landed on the staggering figure in the compensation section, her face went pale.
“That much money? Emilia, you’re so greedy!” she blurted out, forgetting her sweet and innocent act entirely.
I smirked. “It’s what the contract stipulates, Ms. Price. Unlike some people, I only take what I’m owed.”
Blake put the document down, his gaze complex. “You’ve been planning this.”
“I’m always prepared to leave a place I don’t belong,” I said, meeting his eyes without flinching.
He was silent for a long moment, then gave a curt nod. “Fine. I’ll have my lawyers contact yours.”
    He had agreed.
I didn’t want to spend another second in that room. I turned and walked out, not giving either of them a backward glance.
Back in my bedroom, I started packing. The room was filled with expensive things Blake had bought me, gestures to maintain the public image of a happy marriage.
I didn’t touch any of them. I packed only my own clothes and the few precious mementos my grandmother had left me.
Mrs. Finch came in, her eyes red, and quietly helped me fold a sweater. “Ma’am, are you really leaving?”
“Thank you for everything these past three years, Mrs. Finch,” I said, giving her a quick, firm hug. “But I have to.”
Dragging my single suitcase out of the opulent penthouse felt like shedding a heavy, suffocating skin. For the first time in three years, I could breathe.
I didn’t go to my old apartment. I checked into a suite at The Langham. I needed a neutral, secure space to plan my next move.
After making some initial calls for my grandmother’s funeral, I was exhausted, hollowed out. I decided to go to the hotel bar for a drink.
I changed my clothes and stepped into the elevator. Just as the doors were sliding shut, a hand shot out, stopping them.
The doors opened again to reveal Blake and Sophie. The relaxed expressions on their faces froze the instant they saw me. Sophie, clinging to Blake’s arm, cut off her giggling mid-laugh, and in its place came a fleeting flash of surprise in both their eyes.
She dressed to the nines for a night out.
The small space instantly felt airless. I pressed myself into the corner, turning my face away, pretending they weren’t there.
But I could feel Blake’s eyes on me, a heavy, scrutinizing gaze.
The elevator stopped at the VIP floor. They stepped out, heading toward a private lounge called “The Captain’s Deck,” reserved for elite athletes.
As they walked away, Sophie glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes flashing with provocation. She whispered something in Blake’s ear, and he actually smiled.
I stood frozen in the elevator, watching them disappear through the lounge doors. The fire I’d been trying to bank down roared back to life.
They thought I was gone, so they could just celebrate?
    The doors started to close.
I jabbed the button for the same floor.

The first thing I felt was a splitting headache as mocking maids shoved me into a heavy wedding dress.

Then, the memories of this body flooded in. My stepmother had forced a drugged drink down my throat, my stepsister had slashed my face to the bone with a silver comb, and my fiancé, Prince Alaric, had his men beat me.

They had planned a cruel spectacle. They dragged me to the altar to be a mad, disfigured bride, ruining my own wedding so my “kind” stepsister could step in and save the day.

Under the crystal chandeliers, the entire royal court gasped at my gruesome scars.

Alaric looked at me with disgust and publicly declared me a wolfless disgrace, completely unfit to be his Luna, while my stepsister stood poised to take my place.

They thought they had broken me. They thought I would just accept my fate as a pathetic stepping stone for their perfect ending.

They didn’t know the original Florence was dead, and the soul now occupying this body was forged in a ruthless future.

Instead of crying, I glided to the altar, pulled a silver pin from my hair, and pressed the sharp point directly against Alaric’s throat.

“I reject you as my mate.”

Looking at his terrified eyes, I smiled and made a vow to the stunned crowd.

“For the humiliation I’ve suffered today, I will repay it a hundred times over!”

His Defiant Luna: The Alpha Prince’s Secret Healer Chapter 1

    Florence POV:
My head felt like it was splitting open. A sharp, hammering pain pulsed behind my eyes, synchronized with the thumping bass of the music.
Muffled voices buzzed around me, a swarm of insects I couldn’t swat away.
I forced my eyelids open. The crystal chandelier above shattered into a thousand dazzling fragments of light. Smirking faces slowly came into focus, their eyes filled with undisguised mockery. A girl in a lavish pink gown stood over me, her blonde hair glowing like a perfect halo as she looked down with cold arrogance.
“Florence, stop playing dead!” she snapped, her voice sharp and triumphant. “It’s your engagement day to Prince Alaric. Even for a wolfless like you, it’s an honor to take my place.”
A torrent of memories surged into my mind—my own, from a life before this one, flooding back all at once.
I was Florence Sharpe. A “wolfless” who had never awakened her wolf, I had been treated as a disgrace and an outcast within my own family. My stepsister, Clara—the blonde girl standing in front of me—had poisoned me out of jealousy and left my face scarred beyond recognition. And now, they were forcing me to take Clara’s place and fulfill the engagement with the prince.
A tall man with contempt in his eyes scowled down at me. Prince Alaric.
“Lady Barb,” he said coldly, his voice filled with disdain, “is this really the best you could find? She’s a complete disgrace. Get her up before she makes a fool of herself and humiliates us all.”
Clara looped her arm through Alaric’s, her voice turning sickly sweet. “Alaric, don’t be angry. My sister is just… not used to these grand occasions.” Her eyes, however, danced with pure, venomous joy.
I pushed myself up, my hand gripping the edge of a table for support. The biological toxin still lingered in my system, a familiar, low-grade poison.
In my past life, I had been a bio-engineer from a future far beyond this world—and with that knowledge now awake in me, neutralizing it would be simple.
But first, I needed to collect some interest.
Whispers slithered through the crowd. “Look at the scar on her face, how hideous.” “A wolfless dares to marry the prince?” “The shame of the Sharpe family.”
The noise was like flies buzzing over a corpse.
Seeing me stand, Clara assumed I had submitted. A victorious smile spread across her face as she reached out to “help” me. “Come, sister. It’s time to complete the ceremony before the Elders.”
The moment her fingers brushed my arm, I moved.
My hand shot out, clamping around her wrist like a steel trap. Her smile froze.
    Crack.
The sound was crisp and clear. A sharp slap echoed through the suddenly silent hall.
    Everyone stared, their mouths agape.
Clara clutched her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief. “You… you hit me?” she shrieked.
A cold smile touched my lips. I slapped her again, harder this time. “Hit you? I’m going to kill you.”
I didn’t stop. Left, right, my hands became a blur, each slap a repayment for the pain and humiliation this body had endured. I struck her thirty times, until her face was a swollen, purple mess and blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
“You lunatic! Stop!” Prince Alaric roared, finally breaking from his shock and charging toward me.
I let go of the whimpering Clara and snatched a heavy crystal vase from a nearby table.
He didn’t slow down, not expecting any real resistance.
    I didn’t hesitate.
The vase shattered against his skull with a sickening crunch. Blood streamed down his forehead, mingling with the water and flower petals.
He staggered back, his hand flying to his head, his anger replaced by a flicker of fear.
I walked to the center of the hall, my gaze sweeping over the stunned guests. My voice was clear and cold. “I, Florence Sharpe, hereby formally dissolve my engagement to Prince Alaric. Anyone who wants this piece of trash is welcome to him.”
I then walked to the sniveling heap that was Clara and plucked a long, sharp silver pin from her elaborate hairstyle.
The Royal Guards finally drew their swords, forming a hesitant circle around me.
    I ignored them.
I walked directly to the dazed Prince Alaric.
As he tried to scramble away, I moved like lightning, pressing the sharp point of the hairpin against his throat.
The cold metal froze him in place. He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing against the pin.
“If you want your prince to live,” I said calmly to the guards, “you will all back away.”
They exchanged nervous glances, their swords wavering. Slowly, they retreated.
I kept the pin pressed against Alaric’s skin, dragging him backward with me toward the grand entrance. My eyes found my stepmother, Barb Foreman, in the crowd. Her face was a mask of pure hatred.
I pricked Alaric’s neck, drawing a thin line of blood. “Get me the fastest carriage,” I whispered in his ear. “Now.”
He nodded, his body trembling, and croaked the order to his men.
The heavy doors swung open behind me, revealing the deep, endless night.

His Defiant Luna: The Alpha Prince’s Secret Healer Chapter 2

    Florence POV:
The carriage rattled down the dark, unpaved road. Prince Alaric sat across from me, clutching his bleeding forehead, his eyes burning with a venomous hatred that was almost comical.
I watched him, my face impassive. From the sleeve of my ruined dress, I produced a slender silver needle, as fine as a strand of hair, taken from the sewing kit I had grown up with in this life.
Alaric’s eyes widened in alarm. “What do you think you’re doing?”
I didn’t answer, simply waiting. My body was already working, my advanced knowledge of biology allowing me to break down the lingering toxins molecule by molecule.
The carriage hit a rough patch of road, lurching violently as it entered the winding mountain pass.
    This was my chance.
I lunged forward, my movements a blur. The silver needle found its mark, sliding precisely into a nerve cluster at the base of his neck.
Alaric let out a choked gasp and went limp, slumping against the velvet seat. His entire body was paralyzed. Only his eyes, wide with terror, could move.
I leaned over him, a cold smile playing on my lips. “Don’t worry,” I whispered. “It’s only temporary. You should be thanking me. This is far more merciful than the poison you and my dear sister planned for me.”
I ordered the terrified driver to continue deeper into the Foggy Mountains. Buried in my memories was a place—New Moon Manor, an abandoned Sharpe property with a natural healing spring. It was my destination.
When we reached a sharp turn at the edge of a cliff, I told the driver to stop.
I opened the door and dragged Alaric out of the carriage like a sack of garbage.
I hauled his useless body to the cliff’s edge. Then, I forced the driver to guide the horses until the wheels of the magnificent royal carriage teetered on the precipice.
With a final, satisfying shove, I kicked him.
He tumbled into the abyss, followed by the carriage, a final, crashing symphony of splintering wood and royal arrogance.
After dealing with the trash, I moved alone through the woods, relying on memory to guide me toward New Moon Manor. The terrain was difficult, but my past life as a special operative had given me a physical foundation that my body was quickly re-learning.
Half an hour later, I saw it—an ancient manor shrouded in moonlight and mist.
I expertly navigated around the few decaying traps on the manor’s perimeter and found the natural hot spring, glowing under the moon.
The water smelled faintly of herbs, exactly what I needed to purge the last of the poison.
I shed the cumbersome gown, ready to step into the healing water.
    But I stopped.
My senses, honed by years of survival, screamed a warning.
Through the rising steam, I saw the silhouette of a man. He sat with his back to me, his broad shoulders and the powerful lines of his back stark against the moonlight.
    My private sanctuary was occupied.
I moved silently, creeping closer to identify the intruder.
As if sensing my presence, the man slowly turned.
His face was breathtakingly handsome, with features so sharp and deep they looked carved from stone. A pair of dark blue eyes, as sharp as a hawk’s, met mine through the night.
But his face was pale, his lips pressed into a thin line, as if he were enduring immense pain.
He was sitting on the stone steps of the spring, his legs submerged in the water. Beside him rested an exquisitely crafted wheelchair.
My voice was laced with ice. “Who are you? And what are you doing in my spring?”
The man’s gaze swept over me, lingering for a fraction of a second on the ugly scar on my face before moving on. His tone was flat, yet held an unquestionable authority. “Your spring? This manor, and the entire mountain it sits on, were purchased by me three days ago.”
I froze. My last refuge, the one place I thought I could recover, was gone?
The poison inside me, agitated by the night’s exertions, surged again. A wave of dizziness washed over me.
I had to get into that water. Now.
I looked at the powerful man before me and knew this night was far from over.

His Defiant Luna: The Alpha Prince’s Secret Healer Chapter 3

    Florence POV:
I fought back the wave of nausea, my eyes narrowing as I studied the man. He was sitting, yet the aura of power rolling off him was more intense than anyone I had ever met, Prince Alaric included.
A humorless laugh escaped my lips. “Purchased? That’s interesting. I wasn’t aware the Sharpe family was selling off ancestral property.”
The man’s blue eyes narrowed slightly, as if he were assessing a new piece on a chessboard. “You have a connection to the Sharpe family?”
I ignored his question. “And who are you? Soaking in someone else’s spring in the middle of the night. You look like a pervert.”
A cold, dangerous smile touched his lips. “My name is Gideon Carlisle. As for being a pervert… you haven’t taken your clothes off yet, miss.”
Carlisle. The royal family name. I remembered now. He was Alaric’s uncle, the “Iron Prince,” who had supposedly been crippled by a silver weapon on the battlefield three years ago, losing the use of his legs.
His sharp gaze raked over me again. “I’ve heard rumors of a mysterious ‘Phantom Healer’ in this area, whose skills are divine. Your appearance here, in the dead of night, is quite a coincidence. What is your relationship with her?”
He was testing me. It was clear now. He’d bought this land to find that healer for his legs.
I decided to play along, a mysterious smile gracing my lips. “Guess.”
I circled the edge of the spring, my eyes fixed on his legs submerged in the water. Then, I spoke, my voice low and deliberate. “You’re wasting your time. This isn’t a simple injury. It’s a compound poison—silver dust mixed with the neurotoxin of a black widow spider. It’s been corroding your nerves for three years. This spring can only offer temporary relief, not a cure.”
The calm mask on Gideon’s face finally cracked. The appraisal in his eyes morphed into shock, then into a flash of pure, unadulterated killing intent.
This was his deepest secret. Only a handful of people in the royal court knew the exact nature of the poison. And this scarred, unknown woman had seen it with a single glance.
His voice dropped, becoming a low, menacing growl. “Who are you?”
I ignored him. The poison in my veins was reaching its peak. I had to get in the water.
I walked directly toward the spring and began to unlace the remnants of my dress.
“Stop!” Gideon’s voice was a whip crack. “Who gave you permission to enter?”
I didn’t even turn around. “A cripple who can’t even stand is trying to give me orders?” I scoffed.
The words had barely left my mouth when a powerful gust of wind exploded behind me.
Gideon launched himself from the stone steps, his hand shooting toward my neck like a viper. His legs weren’t completely useless at all!
But I was ready. I dropped into a low crouch, his fingers grazing the air where my throat had been.
We exchanged a flurry of blows at the water’s edge. His upper body strength and speed were astonishing, even with his impaired legs.
I used my agility to weave around him, my mind racing. The power of the Lycan bloodline was truly formidable. This world’s lore spoke of it as a special, high-tier lineage, and I was seeing its power firsthand.
After a few moves, he cornered me against the spring. There was nowhere left to run.
Just then, the poison inside me detonated. My vision went black, and my body went limp.
Gideon seized the opportunity, his hand clamping around my arm, pulling me against him. His other hand closed around my throat.
The lack of air forced my eyes open. I was staring into his icy blue depths.
He loomed over me, his voice a chilling whisper from the grave. “Now, tell me your connection to the Phantom Healer. Or I won’t hesitate to snap your neck.”
I looked at him, and against all odds, I smiled. “Kill me,” I rasped, “and you’ll never walk again.”
His fingers tightened for a terrifying second, the pressure building, but he didn’t follow through.
I used that moment of hesitation. I threw my body backward, plunging into the hot spring. The water enveloped me like a soothing blanket.
I sank beneath the surface, focusing all my energy on expelling the poison, ignoring the man on the bank whose face was a storm of conflicting emotions.
Gideon stood there, watching me, his eyes filled with suspicion, calculation, and a flicker of another emotion I couldn’t quite place.

I woke up from a suffocating void, my twenty-eight years of experience as a top-tier operative merging with the tragic life of a weak Omega named Adeline Cobb.

Today was supposed to be my sacred Marking ceremony with my fated mate, Alpha Prince Angelo.

Instead, I woke up paralyzed by a chemical lethargy my wicked stepmother had slipped me, only to find my fiancé bare-chested in my bed, entangled with my illegitimate half-sister, Ainsley.

When she saw me awake, Ainsley didn’t panic. She just snuggled deeper into his arms with a triumphant, provocative smirk.

Angelo didn’t even sit up. He looked at me with high-handed contempt.

“Since you’re awake, just stay quiet. Don’t disturb me.”

When I called them out on their disgusting betrayal, his face turned furious. He crashed his powerful Alpha pheromones over me to force my submission.

He even threatened to publicly initiate The Rejection right then and there, aiming to completely destroy my reputation and subject me to the soul-deep agony of a severed mate-bond.

A man who cheats on his fated mate has no right to invoke the Moon Goddess. I felt the original Adeline’s heartbreak, but beneath it burned the absolute, cold hatred of my past life.

How dare a prince with no honor and a shameless bastard think they could step all over me?

They expected me to cry, to beg, to have a hysterical breakdown.

Instead, I looked at him with icy detachment.

“This rejection will happen. But it will be me who initiates it.”

After fighting my way out of the manor and extorting my late mother’s massive dowry back from my abusive father, I returned to the Prince’s estate.

This time, I’m going to make him the first Alpha in history to be publicly dumped by his Omega, and I will take back everything that belongs to me.

The Defiant Omega: Rejecting My Cheating Alpha Chapter 1

    Adeline Cobb POV:
“Oh, sister, you’re awake,” a voice said, so sweet it was sickening. “You look so pale. Are you unwell?”
My sister Aisili, disheveled, leaned against my fiancé, Prince Angelo Hamilton. Seeing me awake, she actually added provocation to her eyes and, without a care for anyone else, kissed the completely naked man still in his beast-eared state.
I forced my eyes open and realized I had been drugged with something that made me groggy. What met my eyes was the dim light of the bedroom and layer upon layer of gauze curtains.
Then, previous memories surged crazily into my mind. I saw myself drugged by my stepmother Lady Ginny, saw myself full of heart and hope, putting on the expensive white wedding dress, wanting to marry my fated mate, the Alpha Prince. I imagined marriage would be my salvation, helping me escape the shackles of the Wallace family, and from then on, the sky would be high and the sea wide, and we would stay together until our hair turned white, never apart. But it was all false.
On the wedding night, my fiancé had sex with my sister. This was supposed to be the wedding bed belonging to me and Angelo, but now I could only watch as Angelo cheated and betrayed me. The primal, soul-deep pain of the violated mate bond tore me apart. The dream that had begun in my girlhood shattered. As much as I had once wanted to marry him, that was how much I now hated him.
I let out a mocking snort. What a pair of shameless lovers. Mother was absolutely right. Not a single man is reliable. I remembered her words before she died: “Before you are strong enough, you must endure and lie low. Don’t let others know who you are.”
Since childhood, I had received secret training from my mother: combat, tactics, weapon design, herbology. Before she died, my mother passed on to me all her lifelong knowledge and the secrets of the family legacy. Over the years, I had tried my best to disguise myself as a weak omega. I knew that once I was exposed, being eliminated by my father and stepmother was only a matter of time. A marriage with the royal family was unreliable. In the end, I still had to rely on myself.
Angelo finally moved his gaze away from Aisili. His amber eyes, when they met mine, held no guilt at all. There was only the displeasure of being interrupted and a kind of arrogant contempt.
In the air, the pheromones of the three of us intertwined: lily, wood, and that nauseating peach blossom scent.
Angelo lazily draped an outer robe over himself, released the oppressive aura belonging to an Alpha, leaned lazily against the headboard, and put away his beast ears. “Since you’re awake, stay quiet and don’t disturb my fun.”
I forced myself to stay conscious. Out of habit I wanted to find a knife to defend myself, and I subconsciously touched the callus on the web of my hand. Realizing I was still wearing a wedding dress and had no handy tool, I pinched my palm hard until it bled, forcing myself to stay calm. I coldly shifted my gaze to them, like a predator observing two stupid, trapped prey, unwavering.
My silence made them uneasy. Aisili’s smile froze. Angelo’s brows furrowed slightly.
“Disturb?” I finally spoke. My voice was hoarse from the drug, but every word was like a shard of ice. “I think you’ve made a mistake.”
My gaze swept over them. Thinking of how their bodies had been tangled together earlier, my disgust almost solidified in the air. “This room was prepared for my marking ceremony. This bed is mine. This man… was once mine.”
I paused, watching the color drain from Aisili’s face. “But I’ve never been very interested in used things. Especially not this kind of secondhand goods.”
Angelo’s face flushed dark red, furious. His powerful Alpha pheromones were no longer simply released but came straight at me, trying to force me to submit. “Adeline! Watch your tone!”
I ignored that pressure. Years of secret training had made me nearly immune to such oppressive force. I turned my gaze to Aisili. “And you, my dear sister.”
I said each word slowly and deliberately. “A bastard daughter who doesn’t even have the right to appear at court actually climbed into the prince’s bed through such means. And you’re not even my stepmother’s child—you’re just the illegitimate daughter of my ‘good father’ and his mistress. Not a drop of legitimate blood in you. No family behind you. Nothing. And you think this is a victory?”
“You…” Aisili trembled with rage, tears instantly welling up in her eyes. She turned to Angelo and used her usual “damsel in distress” act. “Your Highness, look at her… Sister is really speaking so unpleasantly today…”
But I didn’t give her more time to perform. I propped up my weak body and swung my legs off the bed.
Step by step, I walked slowly toward them. Each step was like a heavy hammer striking at their fragile dignity.
I stopped beside the bed and looked down at them. “A prince without honor, and a bastard daughter without shame. The two of you are truly a match made in heaven.”
I smoothed the wrinkles on my wedding dress and announced the final verdict in a flat voice. “I have no interest in taking part in this farce. Please continue.”
Aisili’s eyes rolled upward, so angry she looked as if she might faint at any moment.
Actually, when I walked over, I had wanted to kick each of them once, but unfortunately I didn’t have much strength left and could only say harsh words. I realized that I first had to reclaim my rightful status as heir, plan step by step, and only then could I truly complete my revenge. Since we had already torn off all pretense, there was no need for me to keep pretending.
For the first time, a flicker of shock, even panic, crossed Angelo’s face. He had clearly expected tears, pleas, hysteria, not this cold, detached indifference.
Aisili lunged at me, trying to grab my hair. I couldn’t even be bothered to lift my foot. I just dodged lightly to the side and watched as my sister, who had thrown herself straight off the bed, fell flat on her back with her limbs sprawled.
I didn’t look at them again. I turned and walked toward the door, my back straight and my head held high.
My hand had just touched the cold bronze handle of the door. The wolf head carved on the beast-shaped ornament was lifelike.
Angelo’s furious voice roared from behind me, echoing through the luxurious palace chamber.
“Adeline Cobb! If you walk out that door, I will reject you publicly this instant and turn you into a disgrace to the kingdom!”
I didn’t look back. I paused for only a moment and responded with one final, contemptuous scoff.
    “Suit yourself.”
Then, without hesitation, I pulled the door open, walked out, and shut it tightly behind me, leaving the filth, shock, and fury shut inside.

The Defiant Omega: Rejecting My Cheating Alpha Chapter 2

    Adeline Cobb POV:
I walked into the corridor, the wedding gown dragging across the cold stone floor, heavy and pure white, far too conspicuous in a palace full of guards.
I had to get rid of this dress.
I slipped into a servant’s alcove tucked between two marble pillars. After a moment of fumbling, the buttons finally gave way, my fingers still clumsy from the drug, and the gown slid from my shoulders, pooling at my feet. I changed into the simple riding clothes hanging nearby: a dark grey set that would let me move freely. My hand brushed against something cold in the pocket, a silver needle, thin and sharp. It was already there, tucked into the riding coat. I had no idea who left it, and I didn’t care. Now it was the only weapon I had.
I quickened my pace, counting guard posts and memorizing exits. The palace sprawled like a maze, but I knew every corner. I had spent months here, preparing for a wedding that had become a joke, memorizing the layout in my idle hours. My legs remained weak, but I could still move. I pressed my palm against the wall for a moment, steadying myself, biting the inside of my cheek until I tasted the metallic tang of blood. The pain sharpened my mind.
    Then I heard running footsteps.
    “Adeline Cobb!”
A hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around. My back slammed into the cold stone wall, his body boxing me in, one forearm pressed against the marble beside my head. Angelo had only managed to throw on the dark silk robe from before, hastily, the front still hanging open, revealing his bare chest and the traces of the night’s debauchery.
His amber eyes burned with fury. His Alpha pheromones crashed over me like a tidal wave, the kind of force that would make any normal Omega’s knees buckle and head bow in submission.
My knees trembled. The drug made it worse, a dull ache spreading through my legs. But I looked up at him, my face a mask of ice.
“I told you to stop. You can’t leave,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
“I heard you,” I said flatly. “I just don’t care.”
Something flickered in his eyes, shock, confusion, a crack in his certainty. Perhaps he had expected the timid, obedient Adeline of the past, the one who let him push her around. He simply couldn’t understand why the Adeline from before had changed.
Then hurried footsteps came from the end of the corridor. Ainsley stumbled into view, her hair a tangled mess, her silk robe slipping off one shoulder, breathless, her cheeks flushed.
“Your Highness!” she gasped, rushing to Angelo’s side. “Sister, please don’t do this. You’re only making things worse for yourself.”
“Shut up,” I said, my gaze slicing toward her like a blade. “Does a mistress have the right to speak here?”
Ainsley flinched, pressing herself against Angelo like a wounded animal.
Angelo’s grip on my wrist tightened, almost enough to crush bone. “Adeline Cobb! Who do you think you are? You’re just an Omega your family sent to me! I give you face, and only then are you a prince’s fiancée!”
I laughed. A dry, humorless sound. “So, I should thank you for the ‘face’ you’ve given me by performing a live show with my dear sister on my bed?”
His face flushed an ugly, deep red. He gritted his teeth. “Don’t you forget, we are mates designated by the Moon Goddess! To disrespect me is to defy the will of the Goddess herself!”
A cold sneer formed in my mind. A man who betrays his own mate has no right to invoke the name of the Goddess. In this world, the mate bond was sacred, and betraying it was the gravest of sins.
“Respect is earned, Your Highness,” I said calmly. “The moment you decided to let another woman into your bed, you forfeited your right to my respect.”
Angelo was speechless, choked by my audacity. He had expected the timid, obedient Adeline of the past, not this stranger who dared to speak treason.
He took a deep breath, a cruel smile twisting his lips as he played his trump card. “Fine. You want to leave? Do you believe that I can, right here, right now, initiate The Rejection in front of everyone?”
The Rejection. The formal, public severing of a mate bond. It was an act that inflicted immense spiritual and mental pain, a profound humiliation, especially for the one being rejected.
At the mention of it, Ainsley’s eyes lit up with feverish excitement. This was the outcome she had dreamed of.
Angelo watched my face, savoring what he believed was my impending breakdown. He was waiting for my fear, for my begging.
But I just looked at him, my expression unreadable. Then, slowly and clearly, I uttered a single word.
    “Okay.”
His smile froze. “What did you say?”
    Ainsley’s expression hardened into disbelief.
“I said, okay,” I repeated, my voice steady. “Initiate the rejection now. I’ll accept it immediately. It will save us both a lot of time.”
I even took a step closer to him, my presence a challenge. “Go on, Your Highness. Let’s see if you truly have the courage to reject your fated mate on your Marking night, all because you were caught in the act of cheating.”
I pressed my advantage. “When this story gets out, what will they say about you? A prince who can’t even control his own lust? Or a petty man who throws a tantrum after being caught by his mate?”
Angelo’s face cycled through shades of red, white, and a sickly green. He knew he couldn’t do it. It would be the biggest scandal of his political career, a permanent stain on his reputation.
He glared at me, his eyes promising murder, but he was trapped. I had him cornered.
Ainsley, seeing the tables turn, rushed to his side, tugging at his arm. “Your Highness, let it go. Sister is just speaking out of anger. Let’s not stoop to her level.”
I wrenched my wrist from Angelo’s grasp. This time, with his mind in turmoil, I succeeded.
I took a step back, putting space between us. “I am not speaking out of anger.”
I held his gaze for a long, silent moment. The air between us crackled with unspoken war.
My gaze swept over them both, finally landing on his stunned face. My voice was as cold and hard as diamond. “Listen closely, Alpha Angelo Hamilton.”
“This rejection, this divorce… it is inevitable.”
“But the one who initiates it will be me, Adeline Cobb.”
The last shred of color drained from his face.
“I will make you the first Alpha prince in the history of this kingdom to be publicly rejected by his own Omega mate.”
Without giving them a moment to process my words, I turned and strode down the long, empty corridor.
“Remember, don’t follow me again. You two are annoying.” I glanced back one last time.

The Defiant Omega: Rejecting My Cheating Alpha Chapter 3

    Adeline Cobb POV:
I was almost at the main gates of the palace when I heard the sound I least wanted to hear.
    Running footsteps. Again.
I didn’t even need to turn around to know who it was. The sickening scent of peach blossom reached me before she did.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I muttered under my breath. “You again? Do you have nothing better to do than chase me around like a lost puppy?”
I turned slowly, my expression a mixture of annoyance and utter contempt.
Ainsley stood there, flanked by two tall guards, her hair still a mess, her silk robe hastily rearranged. The mask of gentleness was gone, replaced by a face twisted with venom and triumph.
“Sister,” she said, her voice dripping with fake concern. “The Prince told you to stay. Where do you think you’re going?”
“Out,” I said flatly. “Somewhere you’re not. Get out of my way.”
“His Highness is furious right now. Running around like this will only make him angrier,” Ainsley said, her false sincerity grating on my nerves. “As your sister, I can’t watch you make such a mistake. Please, come back to the room and calm down.”
I stared at her for a long moment. Then I let out a short, sharp laugh.
“You can’t watch me make a mistake?” I repeated, my voice dripping with disbelief. “You spread your legs for my fiancé on my wedding night, and now you’re pretending to care about my well-being? That’s rich.”
Color flooded her cheeks, but she recovered quickly. She gave a subtle nod to the guards. They stepped forward, flanking me, their sheer size a silent threat.
I glanced at them. They were the Prince’s personal guards, Gamma-level warriors. A drugged Omega would normally be helpless against them.
    But I wasn’t a normal Omega.
Years of secret training from my mother had taught me one thing: size didn’t matter. Angles, momentum, and precision did. These Gamma guards were used to overwhelming opponents with raw strength. They weren’t used to someone who knew exactly where to strike.
Ainsley’s smirk widened, mistaking my silence for fear. “Be a good girl, sister. Come back with me. Maybe His Highness will even find it in his heart to forgive you.”
I laughed. A sharp, cold sound. “Ainsley, do you know what your biggest problem is?”
    She blinked, caught off guard.
“You fail to recognize your own station,” I said slowly. “You think you can speak for the Prince, but what are you? You’re nothing.”
I stepped closer, lowering my voice to a venomous whisper only she could hear. “You are a bastard, Ainsley Wallace. A whelp who was only granted a surname out of my mother’s pity.”
The blood drained from her face. It was her deepest, most shameful secret. While many knew, no one had ever dared to say it to her face.
“You!” she shrieked, her facade shattering completely. “Seize her! Drag her back to the room!”
The two guards reached for me.
I didn’t wait for them to touch me. My hand slipped into the pocket of my riding coat and closed around a thin, cold object. A silver needle. Standard operative issue. I had palmed it the moment I changed out of the wedding gown.
The first guard lunged for my arm. I dropped low, pivoting on my heel, driving my elbow into his solar plexus with every ounce of force I had. He folded like a piece of paper, gasping for air.
The second guard barely had time to react. I stepped into his reach, grabbed the front of his tunic, and slammed my forehead into the bridge of his nose. Cartilage crunched under the impact. He staggered back, blood spurting down his face.
Ainsley’s eyes went wide. Her jaw dropped. She had expected a helpless Omega, not a woman who moved like a predator.
I didn’t give her time to scream. I closed the distance between us in two strides and slashed the silver needle across her cheek.
She never saw it coming. A short, sharp scream was all she could manage.
The needle carved a thin, red line across her skin. It wasn’t deep, but it was enough. It would scar.
Pain and shock made her stagger back, her hand flying to her wounded face.
“One more word,” I said, my voice quiet and lethal, “and the next one goes into your eye.”
She clamped her mouth shut, trembling.
I turned and walked toward the gate, my back straight, my steps steady.
Behind me, I heard Ainsley’s enraged, tear-filled scream. “Get her! Don’t let her escape!”
The guards were in no shape to chase anyone. I didn’t bother looking back.
But I could hear them stumbling to their feet, regaining their balance, and coming after me. Their footsteps pounded against the stone floor, and I knew I was running out of time.
I pushed through the palace gates and into the corridor beyond. The drug was still a weight in my veins, my legs threatening to buckle with every step. I couldn’t outrun them in this state.
Then I saw it. A decorative suit of armor standing in an alcove, gleaming in the dim light.
I threw my shoulder against it with every last ounce of strength I had.
With a deafening crash, the heavy metal suit toppled over, blocking the narrow corridor. Plates of steel scattered across the floor, creating a wall of tangled metal that would take the guards precious seconds to climb over.
I glanced back. The guards stumbled into the debris, cursing as they fought through the mess. In the distance, Ainsley stood clutching her face, her eyes filled with pure hatred.
I mouthed two words at her.
    “Idiot.”
Then I turned and disappeared into the shadows of the garden. I had to get to a place Angelo would never think to look.
Before leaving the grounds of the Prince’s palace completely, I cast one last look at the brightly lit building. A single thought burned in my mind: Angelo. Ainsley. We’ll meet again soon. And next time, I’ll take back everything that belongs to me.

His Defiant Omega: The Cursed King’s Second Chance Chapter 1

    Alyssa POV:
I held my three-year-old daughter Hope against my chest, so tight I thought my arms would break. Her small body shook, pressed with me behind the trunk of an oak so wide two men couldn’t wrap it.
The forest reeked of Rogue wolves. Their eyes, dozens of them, glowed gold in the twilight like a ring of fire closing in.
“Mommy,” Hope whispered, her golden curls matted with mud, “is Daddy coming to save us?”
Darrion. My fiancé. The Alpha of the Lott Pack. A spark of warmth caught in the ice of my chest.
“He’ll come,” I told her, and I believed it with every scarred inch of my heart. “Daddy always comes.”
Footsteps. Darrion’s tall frame broke through the ring of Rogues. The relief hit me so hard I almost sobbed.
Then I saw who walked beside him.
Corliss. My stepsister. In a white dress so spotless it was a slap against the mud and blood of the woods. A smile played on her red lips.
The alarm that shrieked through me was animal, primal. Wrong. This is all wrong.
Darrion raised one hand. The Rogues—the ones I thought were our enemy—bowed their heads and parted like a sea, clearing a path straight to me.
He walked toward me. His eyes, once soft with adoration, were now two chips of ice. He looked at me the way a man looks at a stain he’s about to scrub out.
“Alyssa,” he said. Flat. “Give me the child.”
The world tilted sideways. “Darrion, what—these wolves—you brought them?”
Corliss slid up beside him, winding her arm through his, pressing against him with an intimacy that made my stomach turn. “Oh, my dear sister,” she cooed. “Still so naive.”
My brain shorted out. Them. Together. My fiancé and my sister.
Hope began to cry, her tiny fists twisting in my dress. “Mommy, I’m scared…”
Corliss looked down at Hope and her face twisted with a jealousy so poisonous it was almost a physical thing. “Shut up, you little mongrel.”
And then Darrion said the words that ended my world.
“I’ve had enough of you, Alyssa. Your weak Omega blood was never fit to be my Luna.”
My whole life cracked down the middle. “And this child,” he went on, “she isn’t even mine. Did you truly think I never knew about your little indiscretion?”
    Hope… wasn’t his? Then that night… who…
Corliss leaned in, savoring it. “We checked. You were drugged that night, you have no idea whose bed you were in. Darrion only claimed the brat to save the Lott Pack’s face—swallowing his disgust the whole time.”
I clutched Hope. The ground spun. My entire life was a stage built by the two people I trusted most, and I had played the fool on it for years.
“Why?” The scream tore out of me. “My parents—the Alpha and Luna of the Clay Pack—they’ll tear you apart for this!”
Darrion and Corliss traded a look of pure mockery. “Them?” Corliss said. “They have their own problems tonight. We led you here precisely to draw their guards away.”
A Rogue pressed a dagger into Darrion’s hand. It glinted with a sickly white light.
    Silver. Fatal to our kind.
Darrion stalked toward me. “Once you’re dead, the Clay Pack falls into chaos. And then… everything becomes mine.”
I scrabbled backward until my spine slammed the oak. Nowhere left to run.
I looked down at Hope’s terrified blue eyes—my eyes. No. I could not let her die.
I shoved her behind me, shielding her with my own body. “Please, Darrion! Let her go! She’s only a child!”
His eyes held nothing. He lunged. The silver blade buried itself in my stomach.
Pain, blinding white, ripped through me. My life force drained like sand through fingers, but I refused to fall. I kept my eyes locked on his.
Then a second hiss sliced the air behind me. An arrow. Not aimed at me.
    Aimed at Hope.
I couldn’t even turn. I heard a tiny, choked gasp—and her little body went limp in my arms.
I looked down. The shaft stood out of her chest, the fletching a cruel splash of color against her little dress. Blood soaked through, warm, and then cold.
At the edge of the clearing, Corliss lowered a bow, her face a grotesque mask of victory.
Time stopped. My soul ripped into a million pieces as I held my daughter’s cooling body.
I lifted my face to the moon and spent my last breath on a curse.
“I, Alyssa Clay, swear upon the moon! If I am given another life, I will hunt you down—Darrion Lott, Corliss Ramsey! I will tear you to shreds and make sure your souls never, ever find peace!”
Enraged, Darrion wrenched the dagger from my stomach and drove it into my heart.
Darkness swallowed me. And in the last flicker of consciousness, I heard it—a sigh, ancient and sorrowful, a woman’s voice from the void itself.
“Poor child. I will give you another chance. Use it well.”

His Defiant Omega: The Cursed King’s Second Chance Chapter 2

    Constantine POV:
I stood at the edge of my territory, one hand resting on the silver head of my cane. The evening wind carried the scent of the neighboring Clay Pack—and something else, faint, that made my blood hum.
A dull ache throbbed in my leg, a permanent reminder of the cowards who’d ambushed me with silver and left me the “crippled Alpha King” of every whispered joke in the werewolf world.
My Beta, Nash, waited two paces behind me. He knew better than to speak when I was in this mood.
    Then the scent hit me.
Jasmine in full bloom, tangled with rain on fresh grass. Sweet. And mine.
My inner wolf lunged against the cage of my control, a roar rolling through my chest. Hers! Ours!
    Mate.
The word landed like a curse. Was the Moon Goddess mocking me? Granting a broken, silver-poisoned Alpha his fated partner at the edge of his own land?
I crushed the wolf’s excitement under cold logic. “Nash,” I said, “go see what’s trespassing.”
He returned fast, his face strange. “Alpha… it’s a girl. I think it’s Miss Alyssa Clay.”
Alyssa Clay. The Omega everyone said I was meant to marry in some political farce. I frowned and moved toward him.
She lay in the moonlight, blonde hair fanned on the grass. She was soaked in blood—but it looked old, phantom, like a stain that had soaked through another life.
Then she jackknifed upright, gasping, blue eyes blown wide with terror. “No… don’t kill me… Hope…”
Another performance. I snorted coldly. So she’d resort to this—a damsel act to wriggle out of a betrothal to a cripple? How tedious.
My wolf howled in my skull, screaming at me to gather her up, to shield her, to kill whatever had frightened her. I strangled the instinct with ice. I did not show weakness to a woman who could be a spy.
I closed the distance and loomed over her. “Alyssa Clay,” I said, voice dripping. “Your performance is clumsy.”
She didn’t seem to hear me. Her hands flew to her face, her neck, her stomach. No wounds. Her body was whole.
And then the terror in her eyes cracked open and poured out something else—a wild, disbelieving joy.
“I’m alive… I’m really alive!” Tears of happiness streaked her face. She ignored me entirely.
The feeling of being dismissed burned. I, the Alpha King of the Blackwood Pack, ignored by an Omega.
I seized her chin and forced her face up. “Look at me, Omega. Do you think playing games on my land will free you from your fate?”
Her skin was silk. The contact sent a jolt of fire up my arm. My wolf purred in satisfaction. Damn it all.
I snatched my hand back as if burned.
Alyssa finally focused on me. And the look she gave me was not fear. It was appraisal. Cool. Knowing. As if she could see straight through to a wound I kept hidden from the entire world.
Her gaze slid to my cane, then to my stiff leg.
My jaw locked. I hated that. It was the mark of my shame, carved into my pride.
But there was no mockery in her eyes. No pity. Only something I couldn’t name.
She rose, swaying once before she steadied. Then she looked into my eyes, and it was like stars igniting in her blue irises.
“Constantine Witt,” she said, tasting my name like it already belonged to her.
The sound of it in her mouth did something to my chest.
She took a slow breath, as if deciding the rest of her life.
She did not cry. She did not beg. She did not simper.
She simply watched me, as if confirming a truth only she could see.
And through the invisible thread of the mate-bond, I felt her. Steady as a blade. And already mine.

His Defiant Omega: The Cursed King’s Second Chance Chapter 3

    Alyssa POV:
Constantine Witt. The Alpha King of the Blackwood Pack. Taller than the rumors, and a hundred times more dangerous.
His dark gray eyes were a storm front. The cane in his grip didn’t shrink him—it sharpened him, adding a layer of coiled violence to the air.
And I felt it, pulling from the deepest part of my soul. Cedar and winter wind. My Mate.
Fate was a cruel comedian. In my last life I was murdered on the eve of being delivered to this man.
But I was not that naive girl anymore. I had died once. I knew—because I had heard the stories, lived through the aftermath—that this man, for all his ferocity, was the only one who could protect me. The only sword sharp enough to help me take my revenge.
His coldness and mockery were nothing but the growl of a wounded beast. I knew his weakness. I was born to be his cure.
I crushed my grief and hatred into a single, burning point. My goal was simple: secure him.
I straightened my spine and met his gaze head-on. For an Omega to meet an Alpha’s eyes was a challenge. I no longer cared for such rules.
A flicker of surprise crossed his face before the ice closed over it again.
“Constantine Witt,” I said, clear and firm. “I know I am your fated Mate.”
Behind him, his Beta—Nash Mills, if memory served—sucked in a sharp breath.
Constantine’s lips pressed thin. He didn’t confirm. He didn’t deny.
I stepped forward, closing the space until I could smell the cedar and, beneath it, a burning desire he was trying very hard to hide.
I tilted my head back, looked him dead in the eye, and said each word like an oath.
“I, Alyssa Clay, accept this bond. I accept you, Constantine Witt, as my one and only Alpha, my Mate.”
The words dropped into the silence like a stone into still water. Nash’s jaw nearly hit the forest floor.
Constantine’s pupils constricted. He had not expected this. Not the directness. Not the initiative.
The knuckles on his cane went white. He was fighting it.
His wolf was celebrating. His mind was resisting. The war twisted his handsome face.
“Are you insane?” he ground out. “Do you know what you’re saying? Do you know who I am? A cripple whose temper is as broken as his ability to shift—or so the rumors go.”
He hurled the words like stones, testing me, mocking himself.
I did not flinch. I took another step, so close my body nearly brushed his chest. “I know,” I said softly. “But I also know you are my Mate. And that is enough.”
I reached out, slow and deliberate, and laid my fingers over the back of his hand where it gripped the cane.
Lightning. It arced between us, and we both shuddered.
His wolf let out a satisfied rumble I could almost hear through our half-formed bond. Ours! Finally!
Constantine tore his hand away—but his eyes betrayed him. Shock. Conflict. And a flame I had just lit.
I smiled, faint. My first objective was complete. The seed was planted.
He stared at me for a long, hard moment, as if trying to see the shape of my soul.
“You’re bold, Omega,” he said at last.
“I just know what I want,” I answered.
Revenge. And a new life. With him.
He gave a cold snort and turned. “Nash. Bring her. It seems the Clay Pack has sent me an interesting toy.”
    A front. He had agreed.
Nash made a respectful “this way” gesture, awe and curiosity warring in his eyes.
I followed Constantine’s back. Straight. Proud. Even leaning on the cane.
My Alpha King. This time, our fates are bound. You will be my sword, and I will be your cure.

These were the words Daphne heard clearly from her soon-to-be husband. She had been stood up at the bridal shop only to watch her fiancé cradling another woman in his arms and professing his undying love for her.
Devastated but strong-willed, she chose to move on but having the formidable heir, Marco King all over her wasn’t on her bingo card. Like they say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Kicked Out by My Ex, Now I Am His Most Feared Rival Chapter 1 Not mean anything

“Ma’am, should we get started?” The sales attendant asked Daphne Smith who had been sitting at the lobby of a bridal shop for almost an hour.
    Daphne smiled, politely and replied.
“Let’s wait a little for my Fiancé.” Daphne replied.
She and Trevor had agreed to shop for bridal dresses together and she didn’t want to start without him.
Bringing out her cellphone, she stared at the two texts she had earlier sent to him.
    Was he stuck in traffic?
He must have been busy with work and didn’t leave earlier. She knew how busy he could be so she wasn’t upset.
And so she sent him another text.
    Daphne: Are you close?
    **********
Trevor Martin’s phone beeped and he glanced at it.
Staring at the screen, he realized it was the third message that Daphne had sent.
It felt as if he was forgetting something so he picked up the phone.
He frowned on seeing that they were supposed to visit the bridal shop today.
    Fuck!
Just as he picked up his jacket, a knock sounded on the door and before he could respond, the door opened.
    “Rex, I’m stepping out for a moment…”
    “Hello, Trev.”
    He froze, knowing that voice.
Shakily, he looked up to see the one person he had searched for the past ten years.
    “Ma…Mabel?”
She had tears on her eyes. “It’s been awhile.”
Mabel and Trevor had been childhood friends turned lovers. They literally couldn’t picture a world without each other and although very young, they had wanted to get married and spend the rest of their lives together but Mabel’s family were against their relationship and ultimately to keep them apart, they had to relocate with their daughter to a far away country.
Trevor wasn’t rich at that time and didn’t have the means to stop them. He could still recall the last time he saw Mabel, they had both being in tears as they contemplated running away but her family stopped them before they had the chance to.
After her disappearance, Trevor had tried all he could to get rich, to finally have the means to find her and make her his again but his sources just couldn’t find her.
    But now…here she was.
Standing in his office. Looking as beautiful as ever.
“You…you…” Before he could complete that, Mabel ran into his arms, breaking into tears and telling him how much she had missed him and how hard she had tried to come back all these years.
    ************
Meanwhile, Daphne was still waiting for her Fiancé.
He was now almost three hours late. It showed that he had seen her texts. She tried calling him but he wouldn’t pick up.
He couldn’t possibly forget a day as important as this, could he?
    The store was closing now.
“Ma’am, maybe you could reschedule your appointment for another day.” The sales rep suggested.
    Daphne nodded.
She was getting too upset to even try on any dresses now.
She had to go find out what went wrong and he’s better got a reasonable excuse, plus he had to spoil her with lots of apologies and pampering.
Sighing, she headed for his company. She still had some thoughts that an important thing at work kept him busy.
If so, he should have called her so they could work on it together.
By the time Daphne got to the company, it was dark and most of the employees had gone home.
She headed up the elevator straight to his office floor.
As she got closer to his office, she could hear voices and by the time she got to the front of the glass door, what greeted her shook her to the bones.
Trevor and a woman were sitting on the floor, he had tears on his eyes and the sobbing woman in his arms.
“I never stopped loving you, Trevor, for the past ten years, I had been trying to break away from my parents’ grasp so I could come back to you.”
    “Oh, Mabel.” Trevor sobbed.
Daphne’s eyes dilated and her heart throbbed.
    Mabel?
    This was the Mabel?
Before Trevor and her started dating, they had been friends and Trevor always talked about his first love. But over the years, Daphne thought he had moved on or at least, that was what he told her.
“But I guess you’ve forgotten all about me.” Mabel let out.
“Of course not. I never for once forgot about you.”
“Liar. I saw the news. You’re getting married to someone else.”
    “I just…I don’t love her.”
It felt as if a house had fallen on Daphne when she heard those words.
    Her legs grew weak.
“I was only going to get married to her out of obligation and because she…she had helped me over the years with the company and…” Trevor stuttered as if he couldn’t describe what he was marrying Daphne for.
“That means she must mean a lot to you.” Mabel pressed on.
“No. Mabel, I cannot lose you again. Since you’re back now, there is no need for me to marry her and I have to make sure you stay by my side at all times. I never loved her. I was only using her to grow this company. The vice president position of this company is yet to be filled. If you’re be my woman again, I’ll give it to you. Together, we can run this company. Together, we’ll be inseparable.”
Daphne couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
Trevor had promised her that position. He had promised her because of all the work she had put in since the company was founded.
And now, he was just going to kick her out because this woman was back.
He had been separated from this woman for ten years!
He had started dating her three years ago. He had proposed. They were going to get married. He was supposed to gush over her as she tried on beautiful dresses today.
How could none of that mean something to him?!
It felt as if Daphne was losing her mind while Mabel and Trevor were locked in each other’s arms.
“Come, let me take you somewhere.” Trevor suddenly let out, standing up.
Daphne quickly hid, not wanting the two of them to see her breaking down.
From her hiding place, she watched Trevor and Mabel leave the office and get into the elevator hand in hand.
Standing close to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, she watched as Trevor exit the company in his car.
    Tears fell from her eyes.
How could she not mean anything to him?

Kicked Out by My Ex, Now I Am His Most Feared Rival Chapter 2 So easy for him

Daphne spent the entire night crying her eyes out.
She just couldn’t understand why and how easily Trevor could do this to her.
Just this morning, he had been all smiles, telling her how beautiful she would look in her wedding dress.
And now, by evening, he was already professing his undying love to another woman?
How could it be so easy for him?
And not only did he easily replace her in his heart, he also replaced her in the company.
She was going to be the Vice President. Everyone at that office already knew that. She could still remember running around with Trevor, looking for investors when he was just starting up his company.
She could still remember the many sleepless nights she had. She had poured her heart and soul into that company. Trevor always thanked her, telling her that without her help, the company wouldn’t have achieved this much success.
But now? Now he was just going to cast her aside?
For someone who probably didn’t know anything about business?
    What was Mabel’s qualification?
    His first love?
Daphne sobbed even more, feeling worthless.
Her phone beeped. She hastily picked it up but once she saw that it was an email alert and not a text from Trevor, she wanted to hit herself.
    What was she expecting?
That he would reach out? And say what?
Maybe break up with her over text.
She sniffed as a name on the email registered in her head.
King Group. It was a reminder of an email that was previously sent. It was an offer to become the CEO in one of King Group’s companies, SG Tech.
The Kings were the wealthiest family in Boston.
    Danica sniffed.
    That’s right!
    She wasn’t worthless.
She may have become worthless in Trevor’s heart and eyes but she wasn’t worthless to others.
Over the years, while she slaved away wanting to make Trevor’s company a success, she had been approached by several other companies, offering her mouth-watering positions but she always turned them down.
She had been so in love with Trevor and she genuinely wanted to make his dream come true.
Daphne laughed at herself. Even though she had genuinely loved working for Trevor’s company, even though she loved the people and everything they had built but this…this was an insult to her.
Daphne wiped her cheeks. She wasn’t going to work under Trevor and his first love.
They had been together for three years, if he sincerely felt nothing for her, he shouldn’t have dated her in the first place, he shouldn’t have led her on to the point of almost getting married.
She wasn’t just some toy one can discard at any time. Picking up her phone again, she canceled the bridal shop appointment and then began to write up a resignation letter.
At this point, she didn’t know how her life would turn out or if she’d ever recover from this pain but crying wouldn’t solve anything either.
    **********
Daphne calmly considered SG tech’s invitation and headed over there the following day.
Marco King, the heir to the King Group personally came downstairs to greet her.
“Hello, Miss Smith, it’s nice to finally meet you.”
Daphne nodded and shook hands with him.
    “Likewise.”
“I was glad to hear your feedback on the email. Having someone like you in my team is quite an honor.”
If it were before, Daphne would have been glad at such compliment but she was still so heartbroken so she forced a smile.
    “Are you okay?” Marco asked.
    She quickly nodded. “I’m fine.”
She had make up on to shield how haggard her face was after crying all night. But her mood somehow was still so sour.
Marco led her to the conference hall where he presented her a contract.
Daphne went over it, the cooperation term was quite generous, and she knew she’d have wider opportunities working under King Group.
Who could say no to this?
But her head wasn’t in the right place right now. If she wanted to start working in such a grand company, she had to bring in her A game. Her mother’s surgery was just around the corner. Her heart was currently in a shattered state. She just needed some time to regroup.
She previously wanted to take a month leave from TM, Trevor’s company, to be there for her mom and also plan their wedding but she guessed instead of a wedding, she had to nurse a broken heart.
Daphne then told Marco about her planned one-month vacation, in exchange, she would also do a trial month at SG.
After completing her resignation from TM, she would officially sign the contract.
Marco was surprisingly understanding and agreed to whatever she wanted. From what she had heard about him, Daphne was surprised to find him quite polite.
He was known to be cold and cruel. If she wasn’t in a devastated state right now, she would taken in how rakishly handsome he was.
But after getting dumped in this way, she wanted to stay away from handsome men at this point. She didn’t even want to stare at them for too long, talk more of gush over their looks.
    ***********
Daphne brought some of her things as she prepared to accompany her mother during the period of her surgery.
Her mother, Susan was in good spirits. It was one of the things Daphne loved about her.
No matter the situation, her mother always tried to stay positive.
“Where’s Trevor? I thought you were coming with him.”
Not wanting to get her mother tensed before surgery, Daphne replied.
“He’s busy with work. He’d come by once he’s free.”
Daphne wondered how she’d break the news to her mother. The woman really liked Trevor.
That thought almost made her want to cry again but she fought back the tears.
“I hope he isn’t working too much. You two have been worried about me these past few months, working and also taking care of this old woman, once I get better, I’m going to make you two good home-cooked meals everyday.” Susan said, excitedly.
Daphne nodded with tears filled eyes.
She wondered if Trevor had seen her resignation letter yet. She had sent it through courier service, she genuinely didn’t want to see him ever again.

Kicked Out by My Ex, Now I Am His Most Feared Rival Chapter 3 The resignation letter

The resignation letter had indeed been delivered to Trevor’s company.
His secretary, Rex received the letter meant for his boss and headed straight to the office.
“A delivery came in for you, sir.” Rex announced placing the letter on the table.
Trevor only nodded, curtly, his full attention was on his monitor screen.
By the time he was a bit free, he picked up the letter and opened it but before he could read the content or know who it was from, his intercom rang.
    “Hello.”
    “Sir, the clients are here.”
Trevor immediately stood up. Those were important personalities he had been waiting for all day. In his haste to leave the office, he brushed past the letter, which flew and fell close to the trash can.
The cleaning lady came by and seeing the paper close to the trash can, she added it to trash and went about her day, cleaning and disposing of waste.
By the time Trevor returned from his meeting, he had completely forgotten about the letter.
He sat on his swivel chair and just then, a low knock sounded on his door. He looked up and smiled on seeing Mabel.
She walked in, holding some files.
“I wanted to discuss the company product development plans with you.”
Trevor pulled her arm and made her sit on his laps.
He had just announced this morning to the employees that she was the Vice president and she was working already?
He felt he made the right decision but he didn’t want to stress her.
“You know the vice president position can just be name only, sweetheart. You do not have to do much.”
“Of course I have. I have to prove that I deserve this position, plus, I feel like I haven’t been of much help to you these past years and I have to help you as much as I can now.”
“You coming back to me is more than enough.” He let out, lovingly.
“Still, I have to work.” She insisted.
They both went over the plan together and after she left, Rex walked in.
He looked uneasy as if not knowing how to start.
“Get it out of your system, Rex.”
“Sir, the board of directors are confused, and also majority of the employees. We all thought Daphne was going to be the VP, so suddenly making that woman…”
“That woman, Rex, is the love of my life. This is my company and I can make any decision I want.”
    Rex quickly nodded. “Yes…Yes, sir.”
He then hurried out so he wouldn’t get fired. But even as he got back to his desk, he was still so confused.
Everyone in the company knew how hard Daphne had worked especially those who started working here since the company was founded.
What baffled him even more was that most people knew they were dating and engaged.
What could have happened for another woman to come in overnight and not only steal Daphne’s man but also her position?
Rex wondered if his Boss had been bewitched.
    ********
At the thought of Daphne, Trevor recalled she was yet to return his calls. He had tried calling her this morning but she didn’t pick up.
He had wanted her to be here for when he made the announcement that Mabel was the VP. He had also hoped to explain things to her.
He was sure she’d understand. She had always been so understanding.
He picked up his phone and gave her a call again.
    This time, the call connected.
    “Daphne…”
    “Hello, Trevor, it’s Susan.”
“Oh hello, Susan, how are you doing?”
“Good…good. Daphne tells me you’re busy with work and that is why you’re yet to visit, remember to take care of yourself, okay?”
    “Yes, I will…”
He heard the sound of a door closing from the other end of the call.
And then Susan let out. “Daphne just came in. Daphne, it’s Trevor…”
Daphne froze on the spot. She felt like turning around and running away. She should’ve taken her phone with her. She didn’t want to speak to him yet.
But now, it was unavoidable. Her mother was smiling and stretching the phone to her.
Exhaling, Daphne took the phone and walked out of the ward. She didn’t want to argue with him. If he felt she’d make a scene that he’d dumped her so suddenly, she wouldn’t. She didn’t even want him to pretend to be remorseful, she just wanted them to amicably part ways.
She might even offer to help him finish the new project because of her love for the company.
“Why weren’t you at work today?!”
Daphne was surprised by his question.
“Anyway, you can’t also take tomorrow as a day off. I need you to write a business trip summary of the last one we went to. It’s urgently needed.”
Daphne blinked, surprised by his shamelessness.
“And also…oh, I have to take this…we’d talk some other time.” With that, he hung up.
Daphne gasped. He didn’t even say anything about his first love or where she stood now.
He also knew her mother was about having surgery and didn’t even ask about that. Instead, he was calling for her to come work.
Was she some kind of dog to him?!
Daphne was so furious and when she got home that night, she began shattering everything that reminded her of Trevor, picture frames, couple T-shirts, gifts he had given her.
How dare he treat her like this?! She wouldn’t waste any more time dwelling on him, once her mother recovers from surgery, she would tell her the truth.
It would hurt her but they both had to move on from that jerk!
    **********
The following day, Daphne received an invitation to Professor Alistair’s birthday party. He had been her personal course adviser when she was in college but she had ignored his advice for her to go for her masters program.
She had given up graduate school to start a business with Trevor and now she felt guilty about attending. Professor Alistair had always praised her for being smart and resourceful. He’d often tell her that she would do great on her own.
Daphne knew he’d been against the idea of opening a business with Trevor. He’d wanted her to build one in her name. So she had kept her distance from the professor. Now, she felt stupid.
Bram, who sent the invitation, assured the professor had always missed her and was greatly looking forward to seeing her.
Daphne decided not to wallow in shame and pain forever, she had to keep her head high, she’d get over this and so she set a reminder for that day.
After arranging her mother’s hospitalization, she joined SG Tech. Daphne worked all night on a detailed three-year IPO plan and proposed bidding for the Ismark Ventures project
After convincing Marco, she gained project leadership and decided to restart her career here.
A few setbacks and a failed relationship shouldn’t diminish her dreams. She could still do great things!

The first thing I felt upon waking was a fire burning inside me, yet all around me was nothing but frozen ice.

I was Seraphina Carlisle, the most “useless” granddaughter of a Dragon Lord. Once swept away by fate to a higher plane, I had survived among interstellar empires and cosmic arcana, training to become a skilled interstellar medic and void operative.

Now, inexplicably yanked back to my homeland, I was forced to once again play the part of the pitiful noble lady everyone trampled on.

My cousin Cammie, all sweet smiles and hidden venom, had dosed me with a blood‑boiling aphrodisiac; she even paid a street thug to destroy me in the dark.

Soon, she would lead a torch‑bearing crowd of high society into this cave, point at my torn clothes, and weep false tears, meaning to brand me a whore, steal my betrothed, and have me exiled to the deadly northern mines for life.

But I was no longer the old Seraphina who could only swallow her humiliation in silence, not after the advanced civilizations and brutal training I had endured.

What Cammie didn’t know was that I had already beaten her thug half to death. And the man whose lap I now sat on, the one I had just used as my “antidote” to survive the poison’s burn, was no vagrant. He was Aldric Beaumont, the dreaded Prince Regent.

I steadied my breath, calmly straightened my dress, and prepared to wield his absolute power to make her pay back everything, with interest.

    标题 Chapter 1

    Seraphina POV:
A searing heat jolted me awake.
My skin was on fire, a furnace blazing from the inside out. But the air was frigid, biting at my exposed arms. The contrast was a specific kind of hell.
I forced my eyes open. Ice. Everywhere. I was in a natural cave of shimmering, blue-white ice.
My head throbbed. My own memories, sluggish and blurred by the drug, rushed back in a tangled flood.
I was Seraphina Carlisle. Granddaughter of the Dragon Lord of House Carlisle. Known throughout the city of Dragon’s Landing as its most useless noblewoman.
Because I couldn’t shift. I had no dragon.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
I was born here, in this world of dragon-kin, yet years ago, by some twist of fate, I was thrown into another realm, a higher, more advanced civilization: a realm of interstellar empires and esoteric arcane arts, where star‑ships sailed beside floating citadels and reality was woven with cosmic sorcery.
There, I lived, learned, and trained. I became an interstellar arcane medic and a tactical void operative under brutal, efficient instructors.
Then, just as inexplicably, I was pulled back to my original world, back to Dragon’s Landing, back to this ice cave, back to being the “useless” noblewoman.
A fresh wave of heat, more intense this time, ripped through me. My stomach convulsed. This wasn’t just pain. It was poison.
The memories supplied a name: Chaos Fire. A brutal aphrodisiac of dragon origin. Without a partner to absorb the heat, my dragon-kin blood would boil, and my veins would rupture.
    Damn it.
The face of my cousin, Cammie Faulkner, flashed in my mind. Her sweet smile. Her venomous heart.
I suspected she’d poisoned me. She was jealous that, useless as I was, I still had a promising marriage arranged for me.
I had to cool down. Now.
I pushed myself up, my palms sliding against the slick ice wall. The cold was a brief, sweet relief against my burning skin.
A faint light trickled in from the cave’s entrance. And in the shadows near it, something moved.
    A dark shape. A man.
My training kicked in. I quieted my breathing, what little of it I could manage, and moved toward him, using the jagged ice formations for cover.
He was dressed in rags, his hair matted. A lowlife. He was staring at me, a greedy, disgusting leer on his face. Saliva dripped from the corner of his mouth.
So this was Cammie’s “antidote.” Tsk, a street thug.
He saw me. A grin split his dirty face.
“Well, well, Lady Seraphina, the useless noble who can’t even shift. Your precious fiancé won’t want a tarnished whore, will he? Someone’s paid me a handsome sum to take good care of you. That Chaos Fire in your veins? I’ll quench it, but I won’t be gentle – you’ll be nothing but a ruined slut by the time I’m done.”
    He lunged.
I twisted my body, letting his momentum carry him past me. As he stumbled, I drove my elbow hard into his ribs.
He screamed, a wet, gurgling sound. I used the impact to propel myself deeper into the cave, rolling away from the entrance.
But the heat was draining my strength. Fast. I couldn’t fight him for long. I needed a real solution. A colder one.
Just as the darkness started to close in, I felt it.
A presence from the deepest part of the cave. An aura so cold it felt like it could freeze my very soul. It wasn’t the cold of ice. It was the cold of a living being.
Hope, sharp and desperate, pierced through the haze of pain.
I staggered toward the source of the cold, my body screaming in protest. I rounded a massive ice crystal, and then I saw him.
A man, sitting cross-legged on the floor.
He was meditating. A mane of brilliant gold hair stood out even in the gloom. A thin layer of frost coated his handsome, chiseled face. His lips were purple. He was clearly in his own world of agony.
My medic’s brain made an instant diagnosis. This man’s profound cold was exactly what I needed. And my infernal heat could be exactly what he needed.
    It was a perfect match.
    I didn’t hesitate. I stumbled toward him.
Behind me, the thug, Rick Tucker, was back on his feet. “You think you can escape? Without me, you’ll be dead in minutes!” he yelled, his footsteps echoing in the cave.
The meditating man’s eyelashes fluttered. He was being disturbed. He was about to wake up.
I couldn’t let that happen. An awake dragon-kin was too dangerous, too unpredictable.
I used the last of my strength to lunge forward, collapsing at his feet. His body was like a block of ancient, frozen marble. The second my skin touched his, a gasp of pure relief escaped my lips.
I could feel a violent, yet incredibly weak, power resisting me from within him. It was the scent of an old wound, a wound inflicted by Dragonslayer Gold, and it was eating away at his soul.
I ignored the deep frown that creased his brow at my touch. I leaned down.
And I kissed his frozen lips.
Rick Tucker skidded to a halt just behind me, his jaw dropping as he stared at the scene.
    The man’s eyes snapped open.
They were the eyes of a dragon. Pure, molten gold, filled with shock and a universe of fury.
He tried to push me away, but I clung to him, using my years of cross‑world combat training to pin his weakened body.
“Save me,” I whispered, my voice a raw rasp against his ear. “And I’ll save you.”
My Chaos Fire met the Dragonslayer Gold’s chill inside him. The two opposing forces collided, not with an explosion, but with a powerful, magnetic pull.
The rage in his golden eyes slowly gave way to a primal, instinctual need. His body stopped fighting me. It started responding.
I tore at the front of his tunic. It was made of rich, heavy fabric, but frozen stiff. The intricate gold-thread embroidery, a pattern of scales, scratched my fingers. This was no ordinary man.
I pushed Rick Tucker from my mind. He was nothing. Only this man mattered. Only this “cure.”
We came together skin to skin, his frozen body pressing against my burning flesh.
I straddled him, and we moved as one—frantic, desperate, each thrust and sway feeding the exchange between fire and frost. His hands gripped my waist, pulling me closer, while my fingers tangled in his golden hair.
Our breaths mingled in ragged gasps, and I felt the poison drain from my veins with every pulse of our joined rhythm. When the wave crested, we both shuddered, collapsing into each other, the heat and cold finally balanced.
I could feel the fire inside me receding, replaced by a calm I hadn’t felt since I’d woken up in this hell.
The man’s breathing was evening out. The frost on his face began to melt. My heat was working.
In the depths of the frozen cave, with a filthy witness, I and this strange, ice-cold man found our mutual salvation in the most primal way possible.
When it was over, I collapsed against his chest, my consciousness fading.
Whoever you are, I thought hazily, you’re mine now.
Then, from outside the cave, came the sound of shouting and the flickering light of torches. A large group was approaching.

    标题 Chapter 2

    Seraphina POV:
The first thing to cut through the haze was a woman’s voice, sharp and triumphant.
“She’s in there! I saw her sneak in with some vagrant myself!”
A cold smile touched my lips. Cammie. You didn’t waste any time.
I pushed myself up, my body aching. I looked down at the man beneath me.
He was fully awake now. Those golden dragon eyes were fixed on me, no longer filled with need, but with the cold, clear promise of murder. He was offended down to his very soul.
I met his gaze without flinching.
The footsteps grew louder. A crowd of lavishly dressed nobles, holding torches that cast dancing, monstrous shadows on the ice walls, burst into our chamber. Leading them was my dear cousin, Cammie Faulkner.
She was a member of the Faulkner family, a branch of House Carlisle, and she had always been jealous of my position as the granddaughter of the main house’s patriarch.
Behind her were several matrons from other branch families, their faces pinched with disapproval, and a few younger nobles just there for the show.
Their collective gaze landed on us. On our tangled limbs, our torn clothes.
A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the group.
The matrons immediately began whispering, their voices dripping with scorn. “By the First Dragon, shameless.”
    “She’s disgraced the Carlisle name!”
Cammie pressed a hand to her mouth in mock horror, but her eyes were gleaming with victory. “Sister! How could you… with a man of no name, no station?”
Her words were a carefully aimed dagger, painting me as a slut who’d consorted with a commoner.
I ignored her, my attention on the man whose lap I was still in. I searched the memories of the original Seraphina for his face. Nothing. He was a stranger.
His gaze swept over my face, as if confirming something. Our eyes met, two predators assessing each other.
Then he spoke. His voice was a low rumble, laced with frost. “Seraphina Carlisle.”
    He knew me.
And in that moment, seeing those unique golden eyes, feeling the sheer weight of his presence, I knew him. Only one man in the entire kingdom of Dragonreach had eyes like that.
    The Prince Regent. Aldric Beaumont.
    Shit.
I had just slept with the one man in the kingdom you absolutely do not fuck with. My face remained a calm mask.
Aldric’s eyes narrowed. The murder in them intensified. A disgraced, dragonless noblewoman had dared to defile him.
Cammie, misinterpreting our silent appraisal as some kind of lover’s gaze, grew bolder. She stepped forward, pointing a finger at me. “Seraphina, you’re caught. What more can you say? You’ve not only betrayed your betrothed, Nathaniel, but you’ve sullied the Carlisle bloodline!”
Her accusation ignited the crowd’s self-righteous fury. They began to shout, calling me a disgrace, a whore.
Slowly, deliberately, I moved off Aldric’s lap. I straightened my torn dress, my movements unhurried, as if I were at a garden party.
My calm was a stark contrast to their hysteria. Cammie’s smile faltered.
Aldric sat up. He simply pulled the edges of his open, scale-patterned tunic together, and an invisible wave of pressure, the authority of a true apex predator, rolled through the cave.
My reaction had annoyed Cammie. She hadn’t noticed the shift in the man behind me. “You harlot!” she shrieked. “Show us the face of your lover! Let’s all see what kind of trash you’ve picked up!”
She lunged, reaching to grab my arm and pull me away, to expose the “commoner” to the crowd.
A glint of ice entered my eyes. I was about to move.
    Aldric moved first.
He didn’t stand. He simply lifted his head and pinned Cammie with his gaze.
That one look was like a physical blow. It carried the weight of glaciers and the chill of the void. Cammie’s outstretched hand froze in mid-air.
The temperature in the cave plummeted. The shouting nobles fell silent, a primal fear clutching at their throats, a tremor that ran deeper than thought, right into their blood. It was the bloodline pressure of a Dragon-God.
Cammie finally realized something was terribly wrong. Her gaze trembled, shifting from my face to the man sitting behind me.
The torchlight illuminated his features. The face that launched a thousand fantasies in every woman in the kingdom, and a thousand fears in every man.
Cammie’s eyes widened. The blood drained from her face, leaving it a waxy, pathetic white.
Her lips moved, but no sound came out.
Behind her, the other nobles finally got a clear look. A chorus of choked, strangled gasps echoed in the ice cave.
    Then, a dead, terrified silence.

    标题 Chapter 3

    Seraphina POV:
Cammie’s lips trembled for a long moment before a single, shattered sound escaped. “Your… Your Highness… the Prince Regent?”
“Prince Regent.” Aldric’s voice wasn’t loud, but each word was a block of ice dropped on their hearts. He confirmed his identity.
Cammie’s knees gave out. She crumpled to the ground with a soft thud, her body shaking like a leaf in a storm.
The nobles behind her scrambled to follow, falling over each other to press their foreheads to the frozen floor. No one dared to breathe.
The once-noisy cave was now filled only with the sound of terrified, suppressed gasps. This was the raw power of his station.
I watched the scene, my heart a steady, cold drum in my chest. This was the kind of power I needed to survive in this world.
Aldric didn’t even look at the groveling crowd. His golden eyes were still locked on me, studying me like an unexpected complication, an object that had disrupted his plans.
Cammie, sobbing on the floor, began to babble. “Your Highness! I… I didn’t know it was you! I thought… I thought my sister…”
A single, cold glance from Aldric cut her off.
“You thought?” He rose to his feet slowly. His tall frame cast a monstrous shadow in the torchlight, engulfing the kneeling figures. “You brought this crowd into my private place of meditation… based on something you thought?”
His words revealed a critical fact: this wasn’t just any cave. This was the Prince Regent’s sanctuary. Cammie hadn’t just made a mistake. She had committed a grave transgression.
Her face turned the color of ash. She began to slam her forehead against the ice. “Forgive me, Your Highness! I deserve death! I truly did not know it was you!”
I watched her, a silent observer. Now was not my time to act. I would let Aldric’s fury be my weapon.
His gaze swept past Cammie and landed on the figure who had been ignored until now—Rick Tucker, huddled in the shadows by the entrance.
The thug had been frozen in terror since the moment the nobles knelt.
“That man,” Aldric said, his voice dangerously soft as he pointed. “Who is he?”
Every head turned. Cammie’s heart sank into a frozen pit. The one piece of her plan she wanted hidden was now in the spotlight.
Two guards from the crowd immediately surged forward, grabbing Rick Tucker and dragging him like a sack of garbage before the Prince Regent.
“Your… Your Highness…” he stammered, pissing himself. “It wasn’t me! I don’t know anything!”
Aldric looked down at him, his golden eyes devoid of any warmth. “Speak. Who sent you?”
I chose my moment. My voice was not loud, but it cut through the tension. “Cammie, my dear cousin. Weren’t you just accusing me of sleeping with a ‘vagrant’? There he is. Why don’t you identify him?”
My words were a scalpel, sliding precisely into Cammie’s wound and reminding Aldric of the plot’s origin.
Cammie flinched, staring at me in horror, as if seeing me for the first time. My sudden aggression had clearly caught her off guard.
Aldric’s gaze flickered to my face, a spark of inquiry in their depths.
On an occasion like this, Rick Tucker’s will shattered. He glanced from my face to Cammie’s terrified one, and survival instinct made his choice.
“It… it was a maid! She found me—she paid me—” His voice cracked, and his eyes darted toward Cammie, a silent but unmistakable accusation.
Cammie’s face twisted in panic. “Why are you staring at me? Don’t you dare slander me!”
It was only a hint, but enough to make the nobles shift uneasily.
I stood up and walked toward Rick Tucker. All eyes followed me.
Then, in a move that stunned everyone, I lifted my foot and kicked him squarely in the jaw.
He cried out, falling backward as blood and teeth sprayed from his mouth.

Daddy’s Little Secret Chapter 1 Silence

    Damian’s POV

Silence stretched taut across the room, a moth could be heard once it flapped its wings across the room.

The food that was prepared by my mother tasted bitter in my mouth. Something that hardly ever happened.

My mother was a splitting image of my brother. Olive skin. Blue eyes and hair that could pass as a bright red colour.

Every cutlery clutching against the porcelain plates created goosebumps that travelled across my skin. My father focused on his newspaper, using his left hand to guard his paper and the other hand to eat his food.

I sighed silently. “How was England?” They went there for a conference that my dad held for all the doctors across the country. I couldn’t go there because of work at the hospital. My mum looked up from her food, smiled at him.

That was a beautiful way of telling me she enjoyed the trip. My dad’s eyes still focused on the paper, he nodded his head.

Mum finally spoke up. “It was a beautiful conference.” She paused, as she dropped the cutlery against the plates.

“Your dad did a great job setting a conference for every medical personnel.” She continued. “It was a beautiful moment.” “Wasn’t it, darling?” She asked.

I nodded along with my dad, unbothered by what was happening.

Beads of sweat trickled down my forehead even under the cold room. I couldn’t bring myself to say the words to my parents. I looked between my parents and my brother, whose main concern was the food that was served to him.

    The time was ticking…

     One…

    Two…

“I can’t do it anymore,” I blurted it out. My parents’ eyes darted across the table from where I sat.

My mother raised her eyebrows at me. I looked at her, as fear danced across my face. This time, everybody’s attention was focused on me. My mother stared at me, waiting for answers. “I can’t go back there again.” I answered.

    “Do what?” She asked.

As three pairs of eyes stared into my soul. “I want to start drawing,” I explained further. My mother was too stunned to speak, so she allowed my father to talk.

My father’s emerald eyes started to harden as he asked. “What will happen to your medical career?” I turned my eyes away from him, staring at everything in the room except my parents. “I’m going to put an end to it.” I said, feeling foolish for my choice of words

There was tension in the air, lingering around the room. My brother dropped his fork and looked at me.

My mum’s olive skin paled and the tightness with which she held her cutlery started to shake.

“Why?” My dad’s voice echoed around the silent room. I laughed bitterly. This wasn’t a question they should be asking me.

My dad ran his hands through his hair creating a wave over his forehead. My mum pulled herself together, straightening her shoulders.

She chuckled. “Stop saying nonsense. We are all eating.” My eyes flickered over my dad who digs back into his food without bother.

My mum’s usual demeanour was back. I pinched my palm under the table this time, before speaking. “I’m not saying nonsense. I can’t continue.”

My mother’s jaw tightened. “I have tried so long to tell myself I could do it.” “But I’m torturing myself cause I don’t love it…”

“Stop it now, Damian” she runs her fingers against her temples.

“Don’t give me a migraine, please.” I screwed my eyes shut, regaining myself for the worse that’s about to come. “But it’s the tru-”

My mother begged me as her shaky voice stirring something deep across my chest. “Stop it now, will you?” I opened my eyes. “We can’t keep hiding this for a long time. It’s making me so unhap-”

“Enough.” My dad slammed his paper on the table, making me shiver from the cold that had started to settle in. “What will happen to the hospital pass over that we organised for you?”

My dad’s firm tone shot at me. “Who will take over the hospital?” he asked once again. I avoided his eyes. I couldn’t be so bothered about the hospital.

Someone better could take the offer. Except that someone else wasn’t me.

“Nola-” “Don’t you dare” my mother stopped me right before I could complete my statement.

Nolan, my brother was the golden child. I was the one made for the media. I was the one made to suffer so they get whatever they had worked for. I couldn’t do it again.

Not anymore. Not again. Drawing was not just a thing of passion, but also a talent.

I could see everybody’s emotions through them and outline them on a paper. That was me. That was who I was.

My mother held her chest, as her eyes started to dim.

“Get out,” my father roared, sending a warning laced beneath his calm tone.

Nolan watched this unfold perfectly but, he couldn’t utter any word. Not like he was allowed to. I stood up abruptly. “I’m sorry I wasted all your effort.”

My mother strained her eyes at me. “You wasted our time as well.”

Tears gathered behind her eyes. “We took you in.”

    Here we go again.

A lecture about how they were the only ones that helped me while life was dealt with me a lot. My dad growled at me.

My mum looked into my eyes. “All Nolan did was make us happy.” She paused. “But with you, it’s a pain I can’t bear on my own.”

A pain so sharp hit my chest as I looked at her. “I was not yours to begin with,” I spoke, almost loudly.

She opened her mouth slightly, her eyes widening, while my father’s hands landed hard on my cheeks from across the table. I took in the sting of the slap.

My jaw tightened. My father spoke his final words. “Get your things and leave my house, you ungrateful son of a b**ch.” I looked between him and my mother whose face screamed an approval.

“Thank you, Father” I said politely.

     “Till we meet again.”

Daddy’s Little Secret Chapter 2 Homeless

    Damian’s POV

As soon as I reached the room, I picked up my phone. I needed a place to sleep tonight. I packed a few things, Nolan slowly helped me, silently folding clothes and handing them to me like he knew words would only make this harder.

I picked up my bag and left through the back door without informing them. I grabbed my coat, my hands trembling slightly. I was ready for this. Or at least I kept telling myself I was.

I walked out through the gate, leaving behind the only car that I had once loved and cherished-the one my parents gave me when I entered medical school. I walked out of the house for the last time, leaving behind the house I had spent most of the beautiful memories I had after staying at a foster home for some time. I sighed, the sound heavy and broken.

I walked through the streets of New York, looking for a cab I could hail hoping to get to the best hotels that were available.

As everyone passed through the street. I couldn’t bring myself to think about all the things I would do to prove my parents wrong.

The clouds began to darken, just as doubt started to settle in. As I flagged a cab who stopped almost immediately. I opened the door and slid inside.

“Good day,” I greeted quietly. He responded with a nod. “Take me to a hotel far away from here,” I begged, my voice barely above a whisper.

He glanced at me through the mirror and drove off without asking questions. “Bad day uh?” He asked gently. I nodded, afraid I would completely break down at that moment. He looked through the mirror and chuckled softly.

The rest of the ride fell into silence until we reached the hotel. I handed him the money and walked straight into the hotel.

At the reception desk, I forced a smile at the lads whose face flushed slightly the moment she saw me. “Good day. I’d like to book an exclusive room,” I said.

She battled her eyelashes, as she checked the prices on the laptop. “That would cost you $500 per night,” she replied.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my card. She took the card and swiped it through the machine.

    It beeped.

    Her expression changed instantly.

She cleared her throat. “I’m sorry….your card has been declined.” I raised my eyebrows at her, fear slowly start to creep in.

My chest started to beat rapidly. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. I had enough money on that card to last me a month.

I ran my hand across my hair, my foot tapping uncontrollably against the floor. “Could you try it again?” I asked, my voice strained.

She swiped it again-this time faster.

It beeped once more. She looked at me with pity. A look that I hated more than anything. “It’s still the same.”

My parents had gone that far. They froze my card. I had nowhere to go. I was alone and all I had left was the $50 in my wallet that could barely buy me a burger and a drink.

I knew I needed help; a shelter just for this night. And I knew exactly who to call. Derek.

I dialled his number just immediately. His voice sounded tired as he answered on the phone. “Where are you?” He knew something was wrong.

I gave him my address. “I’ll meet you there. Just stay right there,” he said. The moment the call ended. I struggled to breath.

I pressed my fingers into my chest. I hardly called anyone for help. This was something I wasn’t built to do. But tonight, I had no choice.

    ****

Few minutes later, Derek was here.

“It’s okay”, he assured me. We got into the car and we went home. So many thoughts filled my mind as I thought of what my parents had done.

This night was gone already. Tomorrow is a day to get ready and start putting out proposals. Derek interrupted my thoughts.

“I was just leaving the hospital when you called,” he pressed the wheel of the car.

I heaved a heavy breath. “With the look of things. I was sure that did not go well with them,” he continued.

    I nodded my head abruptly.

“You can stay at my place till whenever you get back on your feet.”

I shook my head slightly. I couldn’t leech on him because of my stupidity.

“You can have a room to yourself,” he said, immediately reading my mind. Where was Derek staying? He had more than one room. He must be staying with his parents too.

“My dad hardly comes home because of work.” He held the wheel tightly.

“So you have nothing to worry about.” I sighed deeply, feeling grateful for having him to stick around.

In no time, Derek got to the front of his house… mansion.

The building stood elegantly beautiful as the cream colour displayed its specialty. Derek laughed at me seeing the way I was too stunned to speak.

“It’s nothing” he chuckled, while he turned off the ignition. This was something. It was bigger than my foster parent’s house.

“Let me carry your bags for you.” He grabbed the big bags. “There are no maids in this house.”

    ***

“This is your room” Derek took me to the last room by the right upstairs.

The bed was bigger than my bed at home. It had enough space for my artworks. I wish I could stay here forever, but I had to leave and do some things for myself. I needed to find a way to get my talent.

Everyone needed to see me. And I wasn’t going to bound myself just because my parents don’t want me to become an artist.

He dropped the bag and tapped my shoulder. “Just freshen up and come downstairs. I’ll fix us something to eat.”

He shut the door slightly, while I drowned in the seas of my thoughts.

Daddy’s Little Secret Chapter 3 First meeting

    Damian’s POV

     FOUR WEEKS LATER

I had been in my room since I arrived. Derek knocked on the door several times before leaving for work.

Today was an exception- he was still standing outside the door. “Open up,” he nudged me, his thick accent echoing around the empty mansion. I walked over and pulled the door open.

He stood there in his scrubs battered and tired, exhausted, dark circles forming beneath his eyes.

“How have you been?” He asked softly, touching my shoulders, squeezing gently against the shoulder bone.

I pushed my hair back and ruffled it. It had been weeks-weeks of trying to map out every single thing, uploading my artwork on countless sites for people to notice and buy.

But, there was nobody to buy. Nobody was getting it. I looked down, unable to meet his eyes. I felt I was staying for way too long.

He understood. “I brought us some meals.”

“Let’s go and eat,” he moved away, walking towards the stairs.

I slipped a shirt over my body. And went downstairs, this time taking in the designs of the exclusive mansion.

The railings on the staircase took a beautiful ancient design. I couldn’t get my eyes over every single design, the chandelier stood magnificent in the middle of the big room. We got to the dining and pulled the chairs so we could silently eat.

Each arrangement reminded me of home. We all sat down to eat together. We waited for everyone to get back before we eat dinner.

I had not received any calls since I got here. Nobody reached out to me, including Nolan.

They were serious about it and I had already made up my mind already.

Derek picked up the bowl of creamy broccoli and stilton and carefully poured them into his plate. “I just called the restaurant to cook us something very nice,” he said silently. I put a spoon of creamy broccoli and Stilton into my mouth, relishing the taste of the beautiful soup.

    It tasted better than home.

The rich taste of the soup slid beautifully in my tongue. I shut my eyes tightly.

“Do you like it?” Derek asked, carefully studying my face.

     I nodded slightly.

As we silently devoured each of the foods that was brought. Derek stood up immediately, checking the time on his wristwatch. “It’s time to go” I nodded, with foods in my mouth.

“Take care of yourself,” he spoke. I finished the food and picked every plates and utensils to get them washed.

I rinsed them thoroughly placing them in the dishwasher.

A loud, rich baritone voice came from outside the mansion. “Derek,” the smooth voice called from outside.

Was Derek’s brother here to see him ?

My heart raced. “Derek,” the voice called from outside, this time a little angry.

I left the plates and walked towards the door to meet the person and see who he was.

I opened the door slowly, preparing myself for the humiliation that could come after. “Der-” he stopped abruptly, seeing that I was a totally different person than his brother.

    He walked towards me slowly.

My breathing rapidly increased. “Who do we have here?” He spoke, his cinnamon rich scent wafting and filling the whole place.

I opened the door properly so he could enter inside.

My lips quivered, afraid to speak.

His presence filled the empty mansion. He had a confidence you could mistake for pride. His hands kept firmly in his pocket, he moved towards me shutting the door behind.

“Derek did not say a word to me about his visitor.

“Did he?” He asked. I stuttered. “He… I…m so sorry”

    He arched his eyebrow.

He looked more muscular than Derek. His broad smile played on his lips. His shirt stretched across his broad chest leaving a few buttons to expose his hair.

I just wanted to trail my hands over his abs.

He was the most handsome man I had ever seen.

He smiled lightly. “Just kidding. I’m Nikolai. Derek’s Dad.”

    Derek’s Dad???

He looked younger than Derek. I stared into his eyes.

My words refused to spill out of my lips. I was too careful with my words. Careful I was going to say something to upset him.

I bowed my head slightly. “G…oo day Mr sokenvji” He nodded his head slightly, stretching his hands forward.

“Call me Nickolai instead.” “Thank you, Mr…Nickolai” I thanked him.

His beauty captivated me in ways I couldn’t explain. His black suit complimented his deep blue eyes like the sea. I just wanted to stare deep into his eyes.

“Nice chest by the way” he said, making my cheeks flush. I stared at him. I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

I hadn’t noticed when Derek came into the house. He cleared his throat.

The timer on the dishwasher dinged caused a whole distraction to the whole tension that was already created. “Dad,” Derek faced his dad immediately, ignoring the tension between the two of us.

“You didn’t tell me you were coming. I just forgot something and I thought I should come back,” he said, watching between me and his dad.

I turned away quickly and walked into the kitchen, while my ear lingered into their conversation.

“This is my house, remember?” He joked lightly, his gaze never fully left me.

“I forgot something and decided to come back.” Derek’s eyes moved between us.

“I see you’ve met Damian already.” He paused.

“Not properly,” His dad answered, causing my thighs to tremble.

The way he looked at me-like he could see through me.

     And that made me feel

    Vulnerable.

    Exposed.

    Seen.

Afraid he was going to point out my insecurities, afraid and it made me feel seen.

And that terrified me. “Damian,” Derek called, pulling me back into reality.

“I’ll be leaving now,” he said gently. “And I apologize about my Dad,” he smiled.

I nodded quickly and stepped away, moving towards the kitchen.

His voice followed. “See you soon.”

I froze for a second , before walking away finally. It wasn’t until I got to my room, closing the door behind me that I realised I had been holding my breath the entire time.

And I wasn’t sure if I was more afraid of him. Or the fact that part of me wanted him to come back.

While I Was Dying, He Watched Fireworks With Her Chapter 1 Patrick, I Want A Divorce

An ambulance sped through the streets of Aleford.

“Your coronary artery is severely blocked,” the paramedic said to Ashley Cooper. “You need an emergency bypass operation. Is there someone we should call for you?”

The urgency in his voice barely reached Ashley through the intense pressure crushing her chest.

“We’ve contacted the person listed for emergencies,” another paramedic said. “Tell him to get to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Clutching her chest, Ashley brought the phone closer. Every breath was shallow, and speaking took effort. “Patrick… They found a serious blockage in one of my coronary arteries. I need emergency bypass surgery. Can you please get to the hospital? They need you to sign consent forms.”

“Stop it!” Patrick Cooper, her husband, snapped. “You seriously expect me to believe this? Making up something this ridiculous just to force me to see you is pathetic. I’m not dropping everything and rushing over there.”

    “Patrick…” Ashley’s voice trailed off.

As the ambulance drove past Aleford’s largest public square, flashes of light filled the window. Fireworks exploded across the night sky in brilliant bursts, bright enough to sting her eyes.

A moment later, Jolie Webb’s cheerful voice sounded through the phone.

“Patrick, thank you for the birthday fireworks! You’re so sweet!”

    Ashley froze.

Jolie had been Patrick’s first love, the woman he had never truly forgotten. She had returned from overseas only recently.

Suddenly, Patrick’s refusal made sense. He was not too busy to come to the hospital. He was celebrating Jolie’s birthday.

A fresh stab of pain ripped through Ashley’s chest. Her breathing became even more difficult, and tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

Since they got married five years ago, she could not remember Patrick ever giving her a genuine smile.

She would spend hours cooking the dishes he liked most, hoping to please him. His response was always restrained and detached. “Not bad.”

Once, when Patrick had been sick with a high fever, she stayed awake the entire night. By the next day, exhaustion had left her ill as well.

Patrick had shown little concern. “At least you know how to fulfill your responsibilities as my wife,” he had said.

She had lost their baby, yet Patrick’s face had remained unreadable. “We can have another one.”

He had barely even looked in her direction.

Every year on her birthday, Patrick claimed work had made him forget. His solution was always the same: transfer three thousand dollars to her account and tell her to buy whatever she wanted.

Her best friend had even questioned why she continued to stay with him.

Patrick possessed more money than most people could imagine, yet he treated his wife’s birthday like another obligation he could settle with a payment.

Money, however, had never been what Ashley wanted from the Cooper family. She had only wanted Patrick to love her.

For that reason, she had even agreed to hide their marriage for five years. The Cooper family knew she was his wife, but beyond them, their marriage did not officially exist in anyone else’s eyes.

Now, with unbearable pain spreading through her chest, Ashley finally saw their marriage clearly. Patrick’s treatment of her had never been about generosity or money. He simply had never loved her.

The pain became unbearable, and everything around her slowly slipped into darkness.

Through the fog settling over her mind, Ashley heard one of the paramedics yell toward the front of the ambulance. “Go faster! She’s crashing. We can’t wait for her emergency contact anymore. The hospital will have to proceed under emergency authorization.”

“What happens if the surgery goes wrong?” another voice asked, trembling with panic.

    “We save her life first!”

The voices surrounding Ashley faded into an indistinct hum. A sudden, searing pain shot through her head, and memories she had lost years ago rushed back all at once.

    Everything returned to her.

She was from the Edwards family, one of the four most influential families in Aleford.

Ashley had no idea how much time had passed while she was unconscious.

When she finally opened her eyes, heavy bandages were wrapped around her chest. She managed to lift her head a little and noticed the visible relief on the faces of the doctor and nurses standing nearby.

“Thank goodness you’re awake,” the doctor said. “The bypass surgery was successful. You’ll need to stay away from strenuous activity for about a month, but we expect you to recover fully.”

After giving her the necessary instructions, he shook his head and added quietly, “I still can’t understand how we couldn’t reach even one member of your family before performing such a serious operation.”

Ashley’s face was drained of color, and her eyes remained swollen from crying. “Thank you, Doctor.”

She understood clearly that without his intervention, she might not have survived.

The doctor assured her that gratitude was unnecessary. Keeping patients alive was simply part of his responsibility.

Ashley spent the next two weeks recovering in the hospital. Throughout, she kept waiting for Patrick to call. She thought he might eventually call and ask where she had gone.

For two full weeks, no call came. Not even a single message.

What did appear constantly on her phone were reports about Patrick and Jolie.

“Cooper Group CEO Purchases Luxury Yacht for Celebrated Artist Jolie Webb.”

“Billionaire Executive Showers Girlfriend Jolie Webb With Rare Artwork and Expensive Jewelry.”

Each new headline displayed just how much Patrick was willing to do for Jolie.

And the realization hurt each time.

Once she was discharged, Ashley returned home.

She had only just walked through the entrance when Patrick appeared. Without warning, he caught her by the wrist and pushed her against the wall near the console table.

“Where the hell have you been for two weeks?” he asked in a dark, dangerous voice. “Did you run off with another man just because I wasn’t giving you enough attention?”

The force of his grip sent pain through Ashley’s healing chest. For a moment, she felt close to losing consciousness again.

Patrick moved to kiss her, but Ashley quickly turned her head aside. The smell of cigarettes lingered heavily on his breath.

“You’ve spent every day with Jolie,” Ashley said, fighting to keep her tears from falling. “So why does it matter to you where I’ve been?”

This time, she did not shrink away from him.

Patrick caught her chin and forced her face back toward his. “You’re still my wife, Ashley,” he said. “Don’t forget that. I’m warning you to know your place and stay faithful to me. If you don’t…”

His other hand moved beneath her skirt, touching her without tenderness or consideration, as though humiliating her was the entire point. His desire was unmistakable, and he did nothing to conceal it.

    Patrick had never loved her.

While she had been undergoing heart surgery, he had been arranging fireworks for the woman he had never managed to forget. After she disappeared for two weeks, his first concern was whether she had been with another man.

She could no longer see any reason for everything she had endured.

Patrick’s touch became more intrusive. A quiet sound escaped her before she could suppress it, and humiliation immediately washed over her.

She had finally reached her limit. Her body remained weak and pale, but her decision was firm. She lifted her hand and struck Patrick hard across the face. “Patrick, I want a divorce.”

While I Was Dying, He Watched Fireworks With Her Chapter 2 We Honestly Believed You Would Never Return

A dark look settled over Patrick’s face. “You want to divorce me?”

He grabbed Ashley by the throat and tightened his grip. “Have you actually been cheating on me? You used to stick to me like glue no matter how often I tried to push you away, and now you’re suddenly asking for a divorce?”

His fingers pressed harder. Ashley’s face slowly turned purple as she fought to speak.

“P-Patrick… Isn’t Jolie the only woman you’ve ever loved?” She managed to speak. “Once you divorce me, the two of you can finally be together.”

Hearing Jolie’s name, Patrick eased his grip before finally letting her go.

“So we’re back to Jolie again,” he said with irritation. “I’ve told you she’s nothing more than a friend now. Quit letting your jealousy turn her into a target.”

Ashley dropped heavily to the floor, desperately drawing in air. Her heart surgery was still recent, and the struggle had left her chest throbbing with pain. She clutched it while trying to steady her breathing. “A friend?” she rasped. “The sort of friend you sleep with?”

Patrick’s tone became icy. “I know you resent Jolie, but keep those accusations to yourself. If you ever confront her and humiliate her, our marriage won’t last much longer.”

Ashley took out the divorce agreement she had signed at the hospital and tossed it at his feet. “Perfect, because I don’t want this marriage anymore. You give me $20, 000 a month and expect me to handle every household expense with it, yet you can spend $50 million on fireworks for the birthday of the woman you love. I’m not living this way anymore.”

By the time she stopped speaking, her breathing had become labored again. She stayed down until the pain eased, then grabbed the console by the doorway and slowly hauled herself upright.

Her eyes were swollen and red, yet there was no hesitation in her decision. “Our marriage ends here, Patrick.”

She turned and opened the door.

Patrick’s frigid voice came from behind her. “If you leave through that door, Ashley, don’t expect another chance with me. Five years ago, you were a helpless woman with no memories. If I hadn’t taken you in, you wouldn’t have the life you’re living now.”

Ashley felt her chest constrict with pain.

Five years earlier, a car accident had wiped her memory clean.

With no idea who she was or where to go, she had wandered the streets alone. Before long, she had drawn unnecessary attention.

One day, several street thugs trapped her, ripped at her clothes, and tried to rape her.

Patrick had arrived at the critical moment. His bodyguards chased the men away, and to Ashley, he looked like the person who had saved her.

He later proposed that she marry him, explaining that it would silence his family’s constant pressure for him to settle down.

Having no memories and no one else to rely on, Ashley treated Patrick as her only lifeline. She eventually fell for him and accepted his proposal without a second thought.

From then onward, she molded herself into the wife she thought he wanted—quiet, obedient, and easy to please, taking care of his household more like a servant than an equal.

Ashley staggered out of the house and straight into the downpour.

The icy rain washed away the final remnants of her confusion. For the first time in years, she could finally see her life clearly.

She refused to become that exhausted housewife again, wasting her days serving Patrick and waiting for him. She was Ashley Edwards, and she was finally going to take her life back.

Ashley entered a number that had been buried with the memories she lost in the accident.

The instant the call went through, a woman’s emotional voice came over the line. “Ashley? Is that really you? Where have you been all this time? I’ve looked everywhere for you.”

Guilt washed over Ashley. Holding back her tears, she murmured, “Mom, I’ll tell you everything once I get there. For now, I just want to go home.”

Eileen Edwards could barely hide how much she had cried. “Of course, sweetheart. I’ll have someone come for you immediately.”

Ashley had finally recovered all her memories.

Ashley’s true identity was far greater than simply being an Edwards. She was Starlight, the famous painter who had kept her real name hidden from the world.

She was finally returning to take back the life that had been stolen from her.

Eileen’s driver reached her shortly afterward.

By the time Ashley arrived at the Edwards family’s residence, her parents had already hurried outside to receive her.

“Ashley, you’re really back,” Eileen cried, tears streaming down her face. “We’ve missed you terribly.”

Steven Edwards had always been a tough and resolute businessman, yet seeing his daughter again left even him unable to hide his tears.

Ashley pulled both of them into a tight embrace. “Mom, Dad, I’m so sorry.”

For five years, she had remained in the same city as her family. She had paid no attention to the outside world. Instead, she had stayed home, looking after Patrick and his parents. That was why her parents had failed to track her down despite their years of efforts to search for her.

She couldn’t help feeling that she was partly responsible for all those wasted years.

She was preparing to explain the truth when another voice suddenly broke into the emotional reunion. “Mom, Dad, is that my sister?”

Ashley’s head jerked toward the speaker.

Not far away stood a young woman who looked delicate and harmless. Her neatly styled hair framed her shoulders, while her gentle features made her seem like someone who had been carefully sheltered from the world.

The girl tilted her head curiously. “You’re Ashley?”

Ashley couldn’t understand why a stranger was standing so naturally in her home.

The young woman introduced herself through her actions before Eileen could say anything, stepping closer and affectionately taking Eileen’s arm.

Eileen gently patted Leanne’s hand before explaining, “Ash, this is Leanne, your younger sister. When you disappeared five years ago, your father and I were completely broken. We couldn’t accept that you were gone, so we adopted her. She’s been a wonderful daughter and has stayed by our side all these years.”

For several seconds, Ashley could do nothing but stare at them in disbelief.

While she had been struggling through life without even knowing her own identity, her parents had filled the empty space she left behind with another daughter.

Steven shifted awkwardly before speaking. “We honestly believed you would never return. Leanne helped us through the years when we had almost nothing left to hope for.”

Ashley’s heart ached. His explanation stirred that old, bitter feeling of being replaced.

A flash of resentment crossed Leanne Edwards’ face, but she quickly covered it with a pleasant smile. “I’m really happy that you’ve come home. There’s just a little problem. Mom and Dad gave your old bedroom to me, so you’ll probably need to use a guest room. But if having your old room matters that much to you, I can move out and return it to you.”

Eileen’s face brightened. She was clearly pleased by what she saw as Leanne’s willingness to give way.

Ashley’s lips curved into a humorless smile. “Keep it. I’ve never been interested in anything that’s already been handed down to someone else.”

Rather than getting angry, Leanne remained perfectly composed. She picked up a glass, filled it with water, and held it out to Ashley with the same innocent smile. “You must be exhausted after traveling this far. Here, have something to drink.”

Then, without warning, the glass tilted in Leanne’s fingers.

“Oh!” She cried out in surprise as the water splashed over Ashley, soaking part of her clothes.

While I Was Dying, He Watched Fireworks With Her Chapter 3 I’m His Fiancée Now

“I’m sorry, Ashley. The glass slipped from my hand,” Leanne said carefully, as if she were afraid Ashley might punish her.

After all she had endured, Ashley could see through the act immediately.

“It’s okay.” She stepped toward the table, grabbed the pitcher of water, and poured the entire thing over Leanne’s head. “Don’t worry, Leanne. We’re even now.”

Leanne let out a sharp scream.

Water drenched her completely, leaving her looking much more miserable than Ashley, whose clothes were only wet in one spot.

Tears instantly filled Leanne’s eyes as she rushed into Eileen’s arms. “Mom, I was truly happy that Ashley came home. Why would she treat me like that?”

Standing between her two daughters, Eileen was at a loss. But after five years of raising Leanne, her instincts naturally made her take her side. “Ashley, don’t be so hard on Leanne. She simply lost her hold on the glass. She meant well.”

Steven also spoke up. “Leanne didn’t mean to do it.”

Seeing both of her parents immediately defend Leanne hurt Ashley deeply.

She had spent five years wasting her life on a man who was never worthy of her, while her parents had given the love that should have been hers to the daughter they had brought home in her absence.

    The hurt was nearly unbearable.

She had only just returned and had no desire to quarrel with her parents, so she simply responded, “I’m tired. I’ll go get some rest.”

A hint of triumph flashed through Leanne’s eyes, but she quickly covered it with a hurt expression. “Does Ashley despise me? Is that why she’s upset with you too? This is all because of me. I shouldn’t have taken her place.”

Eileen’s heart immediately softened. “Sweetheart, this isn’t your fault. Ashley lost her memory and spent years living on her own. She must have gone through a lot, so it’s normal for her to be more sensitive now. Once you spend more time together, she’ll come to care about you.”

Leanne obediently nodded. “I’ll try my best to make Ashley like me.”

Eileen reached out and gently stroked her hair.

Ashley said nothing else and walked into the guest room. By then, the pain inside her had turned into numbness. She pulled out her phone and called her closest friend, Mina Webb. “Mina, is your offer to open a gallery together still available?”

Mina’s voice immediately brightened. “Ash, you finally agreed! I have passes for an auction at Diadem Auction House. We can go together and see if there’s anything that would suit the gallery.”

    “Okay,” Ashley said softly.

The following morning, Ashley was getting ready to leave for Diadem Auction House to meet Mina when Leanne called out to her.

    “Ashley.”

Ashley looked at her coldly. “What?”

Leanne smiled sweetly. “You probably feel like a stranger in this house now. But you should understand that, in Mom’s and Dad’s eyes, I’m the Edwards heiress. You were gone for years, and they’ve already come to regard me as their daughter. So don’t think you can ever rival me.”

Eileen and Steven had gone out early that morning to handle some matters at Edwards Group. With no one else present, Leanne no longer bothered pretending to be innocent.

Ashley was just about to answer when a man’s cold voice came from outside. “Why would she have to rival you?”

Ashley turned around and saw a remarkably handsome man walking toward them. He wore a black suit and gold-rimmed glasses, and the calm authority he carried made him seem intimidating.

It was Colton Harrison, her fiancé and the boy who had been her greatest rival while they were growing up.

Why was he standing up for her?

Leanne’s face lit up the moment she saw him. “Colton, what brings you here?”

She quickly walked over, slipped her arm around his, and looked back at Ashley with a proud smile. “You probably don’t know this yet. After you disappeared, Mom and Dad agreed that I would marry Colton instead. I’m his fiancée now.”

Ashley kept her expression calm, but Leanne’s words still struck somewhere deep inside her.

Had Leanne taken everything that was supposed to be hers?

To Ashley’s surprise, Colton withdrew his arm from Leanne’s hold. His deep, lazy voice turned cold. “When did I ever agree to marry you, Leanne? Ashley is the woman I intend to marry.”

Dumped By A Hockey Star, Crowned By A Secret Prince Chapter 1 Never Coming Back

Five years with Jeremy Higgins, and Cathryn Carter was still celebrating their anniversaries by herself.

She’d planned to surprise him during his break, to hand him the gift she’d carefully picked out.

Instead, irritation and impatience filled his response. “Don’t make this into some big drama. It’s just an anniversary. I told you—championship first, then marriage. This year is everything to my career. So stay away from the rink.”

Jeremy was hockey’s star forward—the backbone of the national team.

On the ice, he was unstoppable—the MVP everyone feared.

But to Cathryn, he was the fiancé who couldn’t spare her ten minutes.

Her gaze fell on the gift she’d wrapped herself. A bitter laugh escaped her.

His coach kept reminding her how stressed Jeremy was. So she swallowed every complaint, every disappointment. She’d just drop the gift and the lunch with security, and leave. She wouldn’t be that girlfriend—the one who “gets in his way.”

Then a news alert popped up on her phone. “BREAKING: Hockey Star Jeremy Higgins Ditches Championship for Romance. Title Hopes Crash?”

Cathryn froze. Her fingers trembled as she tapped the link.

The video showed the same man—the one who swore he didn’t have a single second for her. In his number 6 jersey, he burst out of the locked-down training facility, swarmed by cameras.

He shoved past reporters and pulled a pale woman in a white dress against his chest.

Cameras flashed around them as he faced the press with red-rimmed eyes. His voice cracked as he said, “I’m sorry to the fans, but I’ve let her down enough. She needs me. More than any of you.”

Cathryn couldn’t move. Her fingers kept shaking, numb and ice-cold.

The woman was Lydia Clayton, Jeremy’s childhood sweetheart and the one he had never truly left behind.

For three years on the national team, every time he lost his shot at the title, Lydia was somehow in the middle of it.

Year one. Lydia caught a cold overseas. Jeremy flew halfway around the world to hand her medicine. He missed the final check-in.

Year two. She wanted to watch a meteor shower. He took her rock climbing, broke his leg, and sat out the rest of the season.

Year three. She fought with her ex. Jeremy stepped in, got into a brawl, and landed himself arrested—banned for six months.

Now came year four. Cathryn actually believed she’d see him lift that trophy and then marry her.

She never imagined she’d watch him abandon the competition and clutch another woman right outside the facility he’d forbidden her to come near.

Just then, the villa door swung open.

Jeremy came inside with the cold air following him, his arms loaded with grocery bags.

Lydia hung on his arm, eyes red-rimmed.

Her voice was barely audible. “Jeremy… do you think Cathryn will be okay with me staying here?”

His arm tightened. His voice, softer than Cathryn had ever heard, murmured, “Don’t even think like that. You’re everything to me. This is your home now. No one gets to say otherwise.”

Cathryn watched them in silence, her nails digging into her palms. It should have hurt, but she felt nothing.

So Lydia came before everyone. Then where did that leave Cathryn, the woman who’d spent five years waiting to be his wife?

Jeremy didn’t even glance at Cathryn. He set the bags down and ordered casually, like he was asking for takeout, “From now on, cook lighter. No lamb, no seafood. Lydia’s allergic. And make her some soup. She’s been out in the cold, and she’s fragile. She needs something hot right now, before she…”

His mouth kept moving, but Cathryn stopped listening. Her eyes moved from him to Lydia—still pressed against him. The pain faded, replaced by a hollow numbness.

Five years of waiting. Five years of running his life. And this was what it all came down to?

The words scratched out of her throat. “So you’re really walking away for her?”

Jeremy had already grabbed Lydia’s suitcase and headed for the stairs. He stopped at Cathryn’s voice, annoyance flashing across his face.

He shot her a cold stare. “Are you seriously guilt-tripping me right now? Her depression spiraled after the divorce. She almost died this morning. If I hadn’t gone—” He broke off, breathing hard. “And you’re standing there judging me? There’s always next year’s championship. She doesn’t get another life.”

“Another year?” Cathryn let out a bitter laugh, her eyes stinging. “You said that last year. And the year before that. Jeremy, every time you promised me marriage after the championship, you were just feeding me a promise you never intended to keep. Weren’t you?”

“Enough!” Jeremy’s voice thundered, disgust twisting his face. “Is being my wife that important? You have to squeeze it out of me right this second?”

No answer came from Cathryn. Instead, she raised her hand and slowly slid off the plain ring she’d worn for three years.

She dropped it onto the cold marble table—careless, final. The ring spun across the surface and came to rest at Jeremy’s feet.

“What the hell are you doing?” His chest tightened, a sudden, unexplainable unease washing over him.

“You’re right about one thing. A life does matter more than any title.” Cathryn looked up at him, and there was no love left in her eyes. Just emptiness. “So I’m done wasting mine on you.”

She turned toward the door and walked away, never once hesitating or looking back.

“Cathryn! How much longer are you going to pull this stunt?” He roared after her. “Walk out that door, and don’t you dare come back!”

Cathryn kept walking. She didn’t even slow down when she answered him. “Don’t worry. I’m not coming back. Never.”

Dumped By A Hockey Star, Crowned By A Secret Prince Chapter 2 Marry Me

The instant Cathryn cleared the villa gates, she pulled out her phone and dialed.

A deferential voice came through. “Ms. Carter, you’ve seen the news? This is bad. Containing it won’t be cheap, but we’ll pull every string to shield Jeremy.”

“Don’t. Handle it by the book,” Cathryn said, a cold smile touching her lips. “Kill every endorsement. Pull every coaching resource we gave him. If he wants to burn his career, let him.”

Her order clearly caught the man off guard, but he didn’t question it. After a brief pause, he quietly agreed.

Cathryn ended the call, and her smile turned even colder.

All those years, Jeremy had leaned on his mystery investor, never knowing it was Cathryn all along. What would his face look like when he finally found out?

Six years ago, a car accident had left Cathryn bleeding out on the roadside. Jeremy stopped and saved her. But that stop cost him his national team tryout.

She’d carried that guilt for years. But Jeremy had just laughed it off. “Don’t feel bad. It was one tryout. If I’m good enough, I’ll get another shot. You mattered more than that team roster.”

She never forgot what he’d given up or how genuine he’d been about it. That was why she’d chosen him. Why she’d spent years bankrolling his career, clearing every hurdle, all from the shadows. She never told him. His pride would’ve choked on it.

And now all that devotion had turned into a sick joke.

Suitcase in hand, Cathryn headed off to look for a hotel when her phone rang once more.

She picked up, and an older man’s amused voice greeted her. “Well, my dear, it seems you lost our bet. You know the agreement. Once you leave him, the first man you meet becomes your husband, and the marriage has to last at least three years.”

Cathryn’s temple throbbed. Looking back, she could only ask herself—how had she been this stupid?

She’d walked out of the organization for that bastard Jeremy and screamed at Elias Thorne, the man who’d raised her since she was a child.

The organization’s rules were brutal. Betrayal meant losing your tongue and your ability to walk.

Elias had gone against everyone to keep that punishment from touching her. In exchange, he demanded a single promise. If Jeremy never married her, she would have to wed the first man she encountered after leaving him, regardless of who he was or what kind of man he turned out to be.

Cathryn cursed her past self in silence.

She took a breath, gritted her teeth, and forced the words out. “Fine. I gave my word. I’ll honor it.”

She had barely finished speaking when her eyes landed on a long haired, disheveled man sprawled beside a dumpster.

For a moment, she could only stare. Of all people, was this really the man fate had chosen for her?

He looked half-dead—a homeless man, probably. Matted hair covered most of his face, revealing only a sharp jawline and bloodless lips.

His white shirt was torn and grimy, with dark blood spreading across his chest. The wounds were deep.

Shootouts between gangs had been happening around this area often lately. Had this poor man just strayed into the crossfire?

Cathryn pressed her fingers to her temple, unable to make up her mind.

    Marry some homeless guy…

    The whole idea was ridiculous.

Still, her pride wouldn’t let her go back on her word.

Eventually, she gave in. Maybe marrying a homeless man wasn’t the worst thing. At least she wouldn’t have to worry about him refusing to cooperate.

For three years, he could play the role of her husband. Once the time was up, she would pay him enough to leave, and her life could carry on without any real change.

Decision made. Cathryn hoisted him up, hailed a cab, and took him straight to one of her own hotels.

Only after he had been cleaned and examined did Cathryn finally relax.

Thankfully, nothing was critical—just multiple bullet wounds from stray shots.

Once the bullets had been taken out and the injuries wrapped, Cathryn remained beside the bed, looking over the man who might soon become her husband.

Without all the dirt covering him, he was unexpectedly handsome. Thick lashes framed his eyes, his nose was straight, and his Adam’s apple shifted faintly whenever he breathed. Even his lips stood out.

The doctor had stripped his shirt off, revealing a broad chest and chiseled abs. His build was better than Jeremy’s.

At least fate hadn’t been completely cruel. It could’ve stuck her with some worn out old man instead.

The TV was murmuring in the corner. Jeremy’s withdrawal? Barely a blip. Every channel was buried in coverage of the Crown Prince being attacked and missing during his royal tour.

Cathryn couldn’t help thinking that Jeremy’s luck was almost absurd.

She took a shower. When she came out, wrapped in nothing but a towel, the man hadn’t moved.

She reached for her clean clothes, intending to sleep in the room next door. Before her fingers could touch them, the man’s eyes flew open, and an icy stare fixed straight on her.

A second later, a veined hand burst from beneath the blanket and locked around her wrist. He dragged her toward him, moved with frightening speed, and turned her beneath him before pinning her down.

His hand tightened around her throat, his touch cold against her skin. “Who the hell are you?” asked him, his voice rough and strained.

Cathryn’s instinct screamed to strike back, but she paused. His gaze was sharp, sure. But wounded like this? He was barely a threat.

His technique was another matter. Even half-dead, the man clearly knew how to fight.

She caught his wrist before he could tighten his grip and studied him with open amusement. “This is how you say thanks? You’d still be rotting next to that dumpster if I hadn’t stepped in.”

Brian Marsh kept his eyes on her, his gaze dropping briefly to her bare neck and shoulders before returning to her face. His expression gave nothing away.

It all came flooding back. Wounded. Stumbling down an empty street. Looking for a place to hide and collapsing before he found one.

So she was the one who’d found him?

Brian searched her clear eyes for any sign of deception and found none.

Silence passed before he finally let go of her. “What do you expect from me?”

Cathryn blinked, caught slightly off guard by the question.

For a homeless man, he certainly spoke as if he had something worth offering. What exactly did he think she could want from him?

Still, the more she considered it, the less strange the question seemed.

Nobody went out of their way to rescue a homeless stranger for no reason. At least, that was probably how he saw it.

Since he had asked what she wanted, she saw no point in pretending otherwise. Her eyes moved over him once before she gave him a direct answer. “Then marry me.”

Dumped By A Hockey Star, Crowned By A Secret Prince Chapter 3 Crown Prince

    Brian froze, his eyes narrowing.

Had this woman lost her mind? Did she honestly think pulling him off the street made him her husband?

Still, she seemed completely at ease, almost as though she had no clue who he actually was.

He raised his chin and studied her more carefully. “You do realize we’re from completely different worlds, don’t you?”

Cathryn nodded. “Good. At least you’re aware of that.”

She missed the disbelief on his face as she secured the towel around herself tighter and rose from the bed. “I don’t care that you’re a beggar. Besides, I don’t need you to be my husband forever. Three years will be enough.”

She stepped closer, meeting his eyes. “Say yes, and we’re getting married today.”

Brian held her stare, his face unreadable.

News stations were still reporting his disappearance, yet the woman in front of him had mistaken him for a beggar.

The misunderstanding was so ridiculous that he couldn’t help finding it entertaining.

He lifted an eyebrow and asked, “What if I say no?”

Cathryn looked him over with a hint of sympathy. “Then you’ll lose your hands and feet. And your tongue too.”

Elias had made sure Cathryn had no way out. The first man she met had two choices—marry her, or suffer something far worse than death.

    Brian’s expression darkened.

Plenty of people wanted him dead, but no one had ever looked him in the eye and said it.

    This woman had guts.

He had every reason to turn her down. Still, the confidence on her pretty face amused him, and he suddenly wanted to see how far she would take this.

How would she react once she learned his true identity and understood what being his wife actually meant? Would she still be so cocky?

Besides, the royal family had been pushing him to marry for years. Bringing home an arrogant woman like her? That would shut them up.

The thought brought a knowing smile to his lips. “All right. I’ll marry you.”

Satisfied with his answer, Cathryn picked up her clothes and headed for the bathroom. “Good. We still have enough time. Get dressed, and we’ll go and make the marriage official.”

She asked the hotel staff to deliver a suit for Brian. After he changed, she took him directly to the city hall.

Once they received the marriage certificate, Cathryn didn’t bother reading it. She took a quick photo before tossing the document to Brian. “I’m leaving. Don’t call me. I’ll call you when I need you.”

Brian caught the certificate and studied her unconcerned face. “You never planned on treating this like a real marriage, did you?”

Cathryn glanced at him before casually pressing one finger against his firm chest. “What, you were hoping to play husband? Sleep together? Act like a real couple?”

Her fingertip burned through his shirt. The boldness of it caught him off guard.

He glanced down at her manicured nails and had to admit that she’d made a fair point.

For years, women had thrown themselves at him—for his title, his face, his money.

But his new wife? She just wanted a placeholder.

Before Brian could answer, Cathryn gave him a teasing smile. “I can’t deny that you’re my type, but this is only a contract marriage. I’m not going to make you do anything. No pressure. Gotta go. Later.”

She turned and headed toward a sleek black sedan waiting by the curb. Its design was luxurious without drawing too much attention.

Brian watched the car pull away before lowering his eyes to the marriage certificate in his hands.

So, Cathryn Carter was her name.

He tucked the certificate away and calmly pressed a button on the silver bracelet around his wrist.

Within five minutes, rotor blades roared overhead.

People nearby looked up in alarm. Before anyone understood what was happening, several rugged black SUVs pulled in and sealed the block.

Trained guards poured out and swept the street clean. Kolton Miles rushed to Brian and dropped to one knee. “Your Highness, we failed you. Punish us however you see fit. Your jet is waiting at the airport, and we can inform His Majesty that you’re returning right away.”

Brian raised one hand to stop him. “No. Find me a place here first.”

Confusion crossed Kolton’s face. “You plan to stay here? But Their Majesties are waiting; they want you to choose a bride.”

“Not anymore.” Brian handed him the marriage certificate. “I’ve already chosen my wife. Start the wedding preparations.”

He opened the car door but paused. His voice was quiet but absolute. “I’m staying. I need time with my wife. No one disturbs me. And not a word leaks until I say so.”

Kolton watched the car leave before staring down at the marriage certificate. His knees almost gave way beneath him.

How the hell was he supposed to explain this to the royal family?

The Crown Prince had vanished for one night and somehow gotten married before anyone found him.

    Cathryn Carter?

Kolton couldn’t remember a single noble family in the country with a daughter by that name.

The Crown Princess wasn’t a noblewoman at all. She was someone no one in the royal family had ever heard of.

Sweat gathered on Kolton’s forehead when he imagined the punishment waiting for him back at the palace.

Still, he didn’t dare challenge the Crown Prince’s decision. He could only watch the car disappear before giving the others their orders. “Find His Highness a place to stay. And dig up everything on Cathryn Carter. Everything.”
